The Allahabad Museum is a national-level museum in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Established in 1931, it is known for its rich collection and unique objects of art, and is funded by Ministry of Culture. Moreover, it is a premier research centre for archaeologists, historians and academicians and carries out extensive research activities and publications in archaeology, art and literature. Its rock art gallery has the largest collection of prehistoric paintings displayed in India dating from 14,000 B.C to 2000 B.C. The museum, using solar power system, has become the first museum in the country to become self-reliant in power generation.HistoryA museum was originally set up in Allahabad in 1863 by North-West Province Governor General Sir William Muir, before being shut down for unspecified reasons in 1881. After the initiative to reopen the museum was taken by Jawaharlal Nehru, the then President of the Allahabad Municipal Board, stalwarts like Madan Mohan Malviya and the then leading newspaper The Pioneer, the museum was eventually opened in the Municipal Board building in 1931. Due to space constraint, the museum was shifted to the present building at the Alfred Park. The foundation stone of the present museum building was laid on 14th December 1947 by Jawaharlal Nehru and the museum was opened to the public in 1954. In 1985 it was declared an Institution of National Importance.Put Allahabad Museum and other Allahabad attractions into our Allahabad trip planner , and watch your holiday take shape.

Very great museum. There you will get great things to learn about. Basically you have lot to explore and learn in here, that you will be tired to explore each and everything. I was mesmerized with the way they have maintained the museum. I visited in 2016 in January while the ticket was cheap as compared to any other museum's in India. You will surely be proud of India and Indian history. Proud to be an Indian. Jai Hind ❤

Unfortunately I need to change my review from a 5 to a 1. The price has increased to a ridiculous 500 rupees for us foreigners! Meanwhile Indians are 40 rupees. That is a terrible price increase that no one should pay for this little, poorly lit museum! Museums in Delhi even are not this expensive, and they have more than just a few rooms. For foreigners: save your money and go to any other museum in India, as this one is trying to cheat foreigners. I hope they reduce this, seeing that no foreigners go anymore, because that price is just insane and wrong. Cheating guests. The following is my original post before the bad price increase. Now valid for Indians only: Very nice little museum. Very much fixed up and renovated since i first went in 2008...they have done a nice job with it! 👍
