Shree Camp Hanuman Mandir, Ahmedabad
Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Sited on the grounds of a former military camp, Shree Camp Hanuman Mandir is one of the largest Hindu shrines dedicated to the “monkey god.” Over a century ago, Pandit Gajanan Prasad founded the temple in the glory of the zealous follower and a major accomplice of Rama in the battle against the demon king. One popular story goes that when the British tried to relocate the temple, millions of swarming wasps surrounded its walls forcing them to withdraw. Notable visitors have included Indira Gandhi--the first woman prime minister--who visited the temple on the day of her election. If you don’t like the crowds, avoid Tuesdays and Saturdays.
