  • It doesn't feel right to "review" a place of worship! I am just sharing the experience of my visit.. Jama Masjid was built in 1423 as per the plate on one of the walls (though some claim it was built in 1424). It was built by Ahmed Shah-I, who is the founder of present day Ahmedabad. It's located in the heart of the old City, now a madly crowded market area. The open court of the Masjid is 87,096 sq feet, and the prayer hall has 256 pillar and 76 pilasters. There is a "hauz" for performing ablution, right in the centre of the open court. The Masjid is an exquisite example of intricate work on its pillar, minarets and walls. Interestingly, it also had borrowed some elements of Jain and Hindu templs (lotus shaped domes, and bell like hanging from chain on the pillars) Which is a clear indication of how the Shah emphasised communal harmony! When you walk through the prayer hall, the sun plays hide and seek from behind the pillars and the exterior walls. North corner of the prayer hall has a small chamber, resting on pilasters, which the Shah used for "muraqba" (praying in solitude to get closer to the God). It's definitely a must visit, when you're in Ahmedabad. Just make sure that you honour the sanctity of the place and experience the peace in quiet.
  • A must visit place if you are in Ahmedabad. This is the grand mosque of the city with some very beautiful and precise stone works
