Mehtab Bagh, Agra

3.9
#2 of 7 in Parks in Agra
Take a stroll around Mehtab Bagh, a Persian-style garden complex sitting directly opposite the Taj Mahal. Separated from the famous building by a river, the garden reflects the same idea that the spiritual resides in the symmetrical. This particular layout, called a charbagh, involves the division of the ground into four smaller parts with water features and walkways. The pleasant garden also offers a good view of the cultural wonder opposite, often with fewer people obstructing your photos than at the building's front. Take a look at our Agra trip itinerary app to schedule your visit to Mehtab Bagh and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

There are nice gardens and a good view of the Taj Mahal across the river. We were disappointed not to be able to get closer to the waterfront. We went at sunset, which was disappointing due to the clo...  more »

Smaller scale but still a good trip and worth a visit. Interesting historical buildin. It was hard to get to as the roads on the way from the centre of Agra are very busy so we were in the car most of...  more »

In Agra we arrived one day from Delhi by train early in the morning (to go around 2:00). The station agreed with the taxi driver, to us all day povozil. Local taxi drivers have standard package: Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, restaurant. In the lost city we do not go, visited the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Before the evening trains have time and we asked our driver to take us to the other side of the River in the Park-Mehtab Bagh. He brought us and before planting advised: "why do you go into the boring Park and pay a whopping 250 rupees? If you go straight up the road along the fence and walk down to the River, there will be exactly the same view of the Taj is absolutely free. We have done so. Go turned out to be close, the view, and the truth is wonderful, thank you, friend, for useful advice. Save 500 rupees for two. The truth is that there have not seen the River all overgrown reeds. And it turned out that we are not advanced. But still, it was the perfect end of our day in Agra.

Good place for late afternoon view of the Taj Mahal. However there is not much facilities provided for the 200 INR paid which I did not even get a receipt. This place is good for that special view which in my opinion is better than the normal view from the monument itself. For me due to this I would say pay only if you think it's worth it...to me I think since it's not that touristic the money goes into the officers pocket since no official ticket was issued even after asking for it.

This garden is located at the opposite side banks of the Yamuna. One should visit this quite place to get the unobstructed view of the Taj Mahal from the back and that's about it. This has a lot of historical significance but I feel the relevant authorities can do much better to upkeep this place. The walk paths were uneven and needed much better upkeep and the same can be said for the the ruins of a building near the Yamuna banks. The ruins are protected by a so called rope but visitors don't care and run in to sit, rest and click selfies. One can drive here in their car as well, but be careful of unwanted guides and additional parking charges. Best alternative bis to take an Ola or Auto with a fix rate to stop for 30 odd minutes here.

Nice view of Taj Mahal across the river. The landscape and architecture have long lost its historic charm. Rearranged as a small grove and seating area near the river.

Where to stay in Agra

Agra offers a broad selection of budget and mid-range hotels, many within easy striking distance of the Taj Mahal, the main reason to visit the city. The area just south of Taj offers arguably the least expensive accommodations, while the streets splitting off from Fatehabad Road boast a high concentration of mid-range hotels. Keep in mind that free Wi-Fi remains unavailable even in most of Agra's nicest hotels--expect additional (and possibly steep) fees for limited Internet access.
