Agra Fort is a historical fort in the city of Agra in India. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty till 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. The Agra fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.HistoryAfter the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, the victorious Babur stayed in the fort, in the palace of Ibrahim Lodi. He later built a baoli (step well) in it. His successor, Humayun, was crowned in the fort in 1530. He was defeated at Bilgram in 1540 by Sher Shah Suri. The fort remained with the Suris till 1555, when Humayun recaptured it. Adil Shah Suri's general, Hemu, recaptured Agra in 1556 and pursued its fleeing governor to Delhi where he met the Mughals in the Battle of Tughlaqabad.Realising the importance of its central situation, Akbar made it his capital and arrived in Agra in 1558. His historian, Abul Fazl, recorded that this was a brick fort known as 'Badalgarh'. It was in a ruined condition and Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone from Barauli area in Rajasthan. Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 4,000 builders worked on it daily for eight years, completing it in 1573.

  • This huge fort signifies the history of Agra and its pretty much worth the visit. To begin with the trench you see on entering was filled with water which has crocodiles in it.Before that there was a layer of grassland with snakes and then there was the huge bridge to the gate with opening from inside. The rest will be explained to you by your tour guide.Have a great day at the fort.Cheers..!!
  • Awesome place. Beautiful fort. We visited on Monday and it wasn't much crowded. Area outside not much good. If the area under Army Cantonment is opened for public to visit then it would be awesome. Eatables not allowed inside. Such a beautiful art work.
  • A must visit place in Agra. A beautiful structure with intricate stone carving and lovely detailing. The workmanship is exquisite and must be seen to be believed. If only the maintenance and cleanliness of the building was given the due importance the entire experience of the visit will be on the next level.
  • One of the must see attractions in Agra, this fort has a lot of Mughal history (spread over generations) attached to it. Despite the fact that only 30% of the fort is available for public viewing, it is worth every bit of it. The fort is huge and has numerous palaces and lawns within. Therefore it is advisable for anyone visiting the first time or who has just limited sight seeing time available to take the services of a guide. Walking around the fort can be pretty tiring so do wear appropriate footwear.
  • Great place for lots of pictures to take. The fort is big and would need around 2-3 hours to explore the fort. Costs 500INR for foreign tourists (as of March 2018). There was no queue when we visited and certain areas are busier than others but that could be the time we went. There’s not much signposts explaining anything in the fort but we weren’t too bothered as I was more interested in taking pictures. Did not visit the light and sound show as heard it was not good. Make sure you bring plenty of water as there are no shops inside when you enter .
