Seljalandsfoss, South Region
(4.8/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Seljalandsfoss waterfall represents a dramatic single river that drops 60 m (200 ft) over a cave cliff. Situated between Selfoss and Skógafoss, this picturesque spot features a cave entrance that allows you to go behind the waterfall into the cave for a 360-degree view of the fall. Be prepared to get damp, as spray from the water often shoots into the cave. Treat yourself to a drink or pastry at the snack truck that is often nearby. Smaller waterfalls exist just a bit farther down the path, so if you're up for exploring, look for those as well. Plan your visit to Seljalandsfoss and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Hvolsvollur family vacation planner.

  • Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Road 1 (The Ring Road) and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. The waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls and natural wonders in Iceland. The waterfall drops 60 meters and is part of the river Seljalands-river that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajokull. One of the interesting things about this waterfall is the fact that visitors can walk behind it into a small cave. It is a joy to photograph and the best time is late in the afternoon or in the evening during summer to catch the evening sun.
  • A superb waterfall, easy to access and unique in its kind: you can walk behind the veil. From the parking it is a short walk to this photogenic waterfall, guaranteed good for nice pictures. Don't forget to walk a little bit further (800 m) to another nice waterfall Gljúfrabúi.
  • A must-see tourist destination if you have one day in Iceland. You can walk around the falls and see many different angles. Some climbing if you want to see even more, but not necessary. An easy hike around the area and stunning photos.
  • Wonderful! Easy access, a cute little shop. If you get here early on a sunny morning in the summer there is truly nothing that can beat it. Better than Skogafoss once Skogafoss gets too busy.
  • We came here in August and it was pretty. A little cold but not so bad. You can walk behind the waterfall. Pretty cool. No hike required, you pretty much park next to the falls. There are also little ones next to it.
