  • One of the interesting features of Snæfellsjökull national park is Vatnshellir, a lava cave which was opened to the public in the summer of 2011. With small groups go under guidance the cave in. It's still what primitive, you get a helmet on and a flashlight. Via a spiral staircase you go to down. Downstairs is no relief. You follow the path of the lava flow approximately 35 metres under the ground. You see the different colors of the minerals of the lava. Very interesting and under ground not affected by the wind and the rain. Inside the lava cave, there are two directions. The total length of the cave is 200 metres. The trip takes about an hour. The guide provides clear explanations. Scientists estimate that Vatnshellir was created after an eruption between 6000-8000 years ago. Interesting to do.

  • Great Lava cave with a couple of staircases allowing access to the lower caverns. Not a large system (200 metres long and about 35 metres deep) but the 1st Lava cave I have seen so it was worth the vi...  more »

  • The visit of the cave was nice. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the visit fun. The tour was short, however. The prices are a bit on the high side. It's probably the nicest cave you can visit in Iceland (otherwise that cave is a bit small). I'd recommend the tour if you're passing relatively close by.
  • I really enjoyed visiting this cave. It's kind of small but I think it was worth the stop.
  • A great experience and the guide put on a fun show. 3.200 ikr is a good price. Last trip inside is at 18.00 and they go every houre.
  • A 45-60 minutes lava cave tour. Guides are fun and very knowledgeable, also good singer too. Recommend to anyone who's interested in caves
  • You will stay inside of volcano about 40-50 minutes, it has 3 place you will see. Consider for the price and tour, it's really a good tour!
