Skogafoss, Skogar

4.8
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Skogar
One of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, Skogafoss sits along the cliffs of the country's former southern coastline. The coast has receded about 5 km (3.1 mi) toward the sea, so these falls now mark the boundary between the lowlands and the highlands. On sunny days, you can often see a single or double rainbow above the falls due to the huge volume of mist. If you don't mind getting wet, you can walk pretty close to the waterfall and even follow a rocky path behind the wall of water. Climb up to the top for a different view of the falls and the surrounding landscape. • Such an amazing sight, worth seeing just because it’s on the main road to everywhere. Be prepared for crowds! Even when rain was flying down there are a lot of people. Also make note to reach the car park when heading from rejavick there is a farmers driveway before the signed turnoff, just a note so us tourists can give the locals a bit more peace 😊
  • Amazing site. So much better when crowds are low. Climb to the top and enjoy the raw power. Then hike a ways to see the mountain peaks. Worth the calories burned to reach the top.
  • A great waterfall! Get immersed with its power by approaching it and getting sprayed with the heavy waters. Indeed the waterfall is clearer at the bottom, but the climb to the top is also crucial, since you see the river leading to the edge before the fall happens. Oh, and the view :)
  • This is the most popular waterfall in Iceland. It is spectacular and free. You can walk right up to the bottom and there is a trail that leads to the top of the waterfall and a hike along the river that feeds the waterfall. If you go when it's sunny, there may be a rainbow. There is a small hotel and cafe here.
  • Fantastic waterfall - you can get really close to it if you wear suitable footwear. The walk to the top is tough so take some water, but the views are superb!! Definitely a must see when in Iceland
