Háifoss (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈhauːɪˌfɔsː]) is a waterfall situated near the volcano Hekla in southern Iceland. The waterfall Granni is next to it. The river Fossá, a tributary of Þjórsá, drops here from a height of 122 m. This is the fourth highest waterfall of the island, after Morsárfoss, Glymur and Hengifoss.
From the historical farm Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Hekla in the Middle Ages and reconstructed, it is possible to hike to the waterfall along the Fossá (5 to 6 hours both directions). Above the waterfall, there is also a parking lot, to allow hiking to be done in the other direction.

  • 4WD recommended. We did see a hatchback there but would not recommend as we had to drive through 2 sections of water. By far, highlight of our trip. It was so windy but seeing double rainbows and how majestic the waterfalls were here… breathtaking!
  • Amazing place. The best waterfall I've visited in Iceland. The scale is unbelievable and the surroundings are simply out of this world. The road there is, however, very bumpy and can be quite damaging if not done well.
  • When we drove up here, I wondered if the trip to the waterfall was really worth it, but I quickly discovered it really is! The waterfalls Haifoss and Granni are amazing, but the view of the valley is absolutely stunning! There were only two other couples there so it's really quick as well.
  • Absolutely amazing, my favorite waterfall in Iceland without a doubt ! Not to crowded because the road to get there is a bit rough (but doable without a 4WD) and because it doesn't appear on many books but it definitely is worth the detour !
  • Haifoss is breathtaking! (Plus the added bonus of having Granni waterfall right next to it). It's only a 200m hike from the parking lot, but you can then continue down the trail longer if you'd like to see more of the canyon (which is also beautiful). The road to get to Haifoss requires a 4x4 vehicle as there are signs letting you know a regular car is not permitted. Highly recommend visiting!
