Svartifoss Waterfall, Skaftafell

4.6
#2 of 9 in Parks in Vatnajokull National Park
Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. Other well-known columnar jointing formations are seen at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, United States and on the island of Staffa in Scotland. There are also similar formations throughout Iceland, including a small cave on the beach of Reynisdrangar. The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges. These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, and also the National Theatre.

  • The hike to Svartifoss is pretty easy and the view at waterfall at the end really good - hence making it a great option! The basalt columns surrounding the waterfall are really marvellous.  more »

  • This is a very beautiful and unique waterfall that plunges down a basalt rock face that has wonderfully geometric basalt formations, forming a nearly black base that the water plunges down. The hike itself is just a little over a mile and a half round trip - some steep parts but nothing too strenuous. There are also beautiful views of the surrounding valley as you climb to the waterfall.
  • We stopped here on our way around the Ring Road. It was a little bit muddy and snowy late in March, but still easily passable and enjoyable walking to this one. We didn't have much time, so walked it as fast as we could (without actually running). All of the signs told us it was a 90 minute return trip - we were there and back in 50 minutes, including time for photos. On the day, the track to Svartifoss was one of the only walking tracks open in the area national park, and it was quite busy along the path. The waterfall itself was pretty incredible, particularly the rock formations behind it.
  • One of the coolest waterfalls in Iceland. It flows over a crescent of basalt pillars. It is not as big as other falls but it is unique. The hike to get there is not bad either and it passes another falls and goes along a stream with views of the mountains and the plains. There is a charge to park, but the WCs are nice and there is a lot of information at the visitor center.
  • A mildly steep hike through gorgeous Icelandic country side and you come over a hill to see Svartifoss in the distance. As you descend closer to the waterfall, the water crashing gets louder and the view becomes more breathtaking with every step. A viewing platform near the base allows for great pictures, as does a bridge over the River in front of the falls.
  • A bit of a hike to reach the actual waterfall from the parking lot but definitely worth the effort. If you are leaving from Svartifoss for a glacier or ice cave hike from the foot of the hill make sure you make time to go see the waterfall either before or after your tour.
