Waterfall
Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. Other well-known columnar jointing formations are seen at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, United States and on the island of Staffa in Scotland. There are also similar formations throughout Iceland, including a small cave on the beach of Reynisdrangar. The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges. These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, and also the National Theatre.

  • Beautiful waterfall! The first half of the hike is pretty steep, but they have an anti slippery surface that makes it easy. It took us about 40' to get to the waterfall. There are other trails on the way that are probably beautiful to explore too.
  • One should definitely wear cramptons when hiking up to the Svartifoss in winter. It is both fun and dangerous to take a picture over thin ice formed above the running water. The site is narrow, so I think winter is the best time to visit when there is less tourist. In summer, I can't imagine how people cram into such a small access area - not to mention if you have to take turns to take pictures over the fall.
  • Very unique waterfall. The columns makes you feel like you are in another planet. There is a short but scenic hike to get here.
  • This photo wasn't taken from a helicopter, this is the vantage point on the way to the falls. pretty spectacular and worth the hike. You can't get as close to these falls however which is a little sucky but it's for preservation so you've got to respect that.
  • Lovely walk up with excellent views along the trail. The unique basalt columns surrounding the waterfall make it a worthwhile stop.
