Svartifoss Waterfall, Skaftafell

4.6
#2 of 9 in Parks in Vatnajokull National Park
Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. Other well-known columnar jointing formations are seen at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, United States and on the island of Staffa in Scotland. There are also similar formations throughout Iceland, including a small cave on the beach of Reynisdrangar. The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges. These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, and also the National Theatre.

  • We stopped off at this waterfall on our way back from Skaftafell to the Airport. At 60m it was beautiful and we saw a rainbow over the fall.  more »
  • From parking to go around 30 minutes. The easiest route even backpacks with equipment and sometimes slippery trail. A small part of the journey passes through the low forest, where we met many representatives of the birds. Honestly, the pictures waterfall looks much larger than it actually is.

  • Svartifoss waterfall is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland - for good reason. Located a short hike up from a parking lot, the waterfalls spills over basalt columns creating a spectacul...  more »

  • By far my favorite waterfall. There are a bunch of historic markers along the way ( the path to the right on your way up gives you more of them), as well as a great geological signpost. The waterfall itself is in an unassuming hilly terrain, making it even more striking against the contrast. The falls are huge, and the pictures can't do it justice.
  • Stunning waterfall accessible by a well maintained easy to moderate path which takes about 35 minutes from the visitor centre and car parking.
  • One of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland, particularly because of the amazing rock formation (columnar jointed volcanic rocks) and the track leading you there. Amazing natural surroundings in one of the most interesting and protected areas of whole Iceland. Stay inside the tracks! It's a 2.2Km walk from the camping site. Been here a few times and every time is like the first. Highly recommended.
  • Amazing and free park. Due to the having to hike to the falls (it's a very good path with earth stairs but it's certainly a decent elevation change) it is much less crowded than the other waterfalls on the southern coast. There are also other trails and little nooks here and there revealing serene settings.
  • Fantastic falls, and due to the distance from the car park to the falls, it's not too busy. Autumn is pretty spectacular here.
