Now considered to be part of Vatnajokull National Park Skaftafell National Park offers the chance to explore Icelandic valleys, glaciers, rivers, and mountains. Starting at the information center, plan a guided tour through the park's grounds or hike the trails yourself. Known for its consistently sunny weather, the park is also home to tons of plant life; birds, such as ravens and merlins; and mammals, such as arctic foxes and mink. You can hike up on the glacier, known to be the largest in Europe. Check out one of the major focal points within the park, Svartifoss waterfall or "black waterfall." It is worth to take one of the great walks on the mountain foothills, past the Svartifoss. Once at the top you have stunning views of a glacier tongue, the Glestchersee and the infinitely long Valley. On the mountain, you get the plants of Islands and many waterfalls to see. Also not much was going on in September. It is worth also necessarily a glacier hike to take a unique experience :)show original

This was a great place to go. I would save it for the end of your trip not the beginning as there is a lot to get done. Beautiful views of the glacier. so walk up in the at direction as opposed to dow... read more »
