The island is also known for the excavated ruins of a tenth-century village and its hiking and biking trails with rewarding views of the harbor. See the original interior fittings of one of the country's oldest churches and a historical display in the basement of the first Icelandic house built of stone. Facilities include a restaurant, a cabin with glass walls that is a popular resting place for hikers, small huts with public bathrooms, and a horse rental. • We went on this island, but unfortunately it was not very nice. Rain, wind and cold walk good 14km around the island. Very little to see or do... No surprise. A stop at Viðey cover the small restaurant on the island. Very nice house. A good Apple cake. We advise against wet weather.

  • We had a lovely day and spent a good hour or so walking part of the perimeter of the island. Very pretty and interesting history along the way. Wear good sturdy shoes for that walk as it's on a narrow...  more »
  • We were there with our 6 and 3 year olds on the last day of our trip, when everyone was tired and we didn't want to venture too far away. Right at the entrance past the church there was a very small p...  more »

  • A great place to visit and take an easy hike. The ferry is a nice short trip. Beautiful views of Reykjavik. Be sure to check out the settlement remains on the south end of the island. There is an open community building there with photos and some interpretive information. If the weather turns cold, it's a nice place to move your picnic lunch.
  • Absolutely nothing to do or see during winter time. Maybe summer would be a better time to go. Freezing cold everything was covered in snow.
  • Very calm island. Interesting and diverse landscapes on a short walk.
  • Beautiful island, even when it is covered in snow. We went in early March and really enjoyed the 30' walk thru relatively deep snow (almost up to our knees) from the pier to the peace tower. The boat route from Skarfabakki Harbour was only 5'. I would recommend using ski pants to avoid getting wet.
  • Took a boat trip to the island. Great information and great birds.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
