Just one block off Laugavegur shopping street, near Hlemmur Food Hall, is Tales from Iceland, a one-hour audiovisual fun experience.

Opened in the fall of 2017, Tales from Iceland offers several stops where you get to know Iceland in an innovative manner. You can fly over Iceland like a bird in a virtual reality setting, stand up-close to a simulated eruption or play around and learn about Iceland's recent history in augmented reality.

There are several photo opportunities, including a photo booth where you can create and e-mail yourself pictures shot on green screen with various backdrops from Icelandic nature.

The main exhibition, "Iceland in a nutshell" consists of several 4-min humorous and inspiring documentaries on Iceland and Icelanders. Narration and subtitles is in English, no headphones are needed. Comfortable sofas and chairs are provided, so you can sit back and rest your legs.

You can also enjoy coffee, sodas, and Icelandic cookies, all included in the admission fee! Tales from Iceland offers free Wi-Fi as well as luggage storage for travelers carrying their suitcases around.
A visit to Tales from Iceland represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Reykjavik online road trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • This is a fun place to visit especially on a day the weather isn’t nice! You could spend several hours here. Hands on activities and Interesting history. Free refreshments (soda and snacks).  more »
  • this really takes you to places where you would have time to go and experience the stuff virtually which is the next best thing. I loved it and the photography and narration are great  more »
  • Fantastic place! Had a great visit here. We were the only ones in, so had plenty time to see everything. Owner is lovely, very friendly. Nice hot chocolate and Hraum 💟  more »

  • Very nice little museum, where one can relax and enjoy the free snacks. Fred, the guy at the reception, was very helpful and super nice. We let our luggage here for the visit and he let us leave for lunch and come back after to take them back. Also, the visit was very interesting and the videos were very nice!
  • It's very chill place. I think it would be a good starter if you were here for a longer trip and were going venture about the country. Lots of history and culture about the country. I think it would get you excited for the things you would see. Also free coffee, soda, and cookies with admission. I recommend it also if you're trying to kill some time.
  • Cool thing to do in town. Maybe a tad expensive however, if you have time and no other plans it's worth checking out. The vr is unreal, seeing Iceland from a bird's perspective. Free snacks and coffee too
  • Excellent - Very entertaining and educational experience. We had about 2 hours of time before our airport shuttle was coming to pick us up and this museum was the perfect pick to spend our last hours in Reykjavik. It was a very entertaining and educational experience. Our kids (6,12,17) were not bored one minute (in fact they didn't want to leave) ... i would definitely recommend this to anyone staying in the city with "a few hours to kill" .....
  • What a unique and engaging experience! Tales from Iceland is a cozy, fun, and accessible way to connect with cultural aspects of Iceland. You can grab a complementary cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa and sit while enjoying entertaining and informative mini-documentaries about Iceland. I personally love traditional museums and cultural sites, but this is a refreshing complement to those walk-around-reading-placards-and-looking-at-artifacts kinds of places. This is a perfect activity for any day when you feel a bit exhausted but don't want to "waste time" taking a nap or relaxing. I think if you go early in your trip, it will provide a nice backdrop for the rest of your experiences. Oh, and the hosts couldn't be more welcoming.
