History Museum Museum
Iceladic history comes to life at National Museum of Iceland, founded in 1863. Though its collections used to be held in various Danish institutions, the museum now houses objects returned to their country of origin in the 19th century. The permanent exhibit includes a celebrated carved door depicting a lion slaying a dragon. Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.

  • Provided a real sense of what Iceland's history was like. The harsh environment they must have suffered through all those years ago and even now how it is still almost as unforgiving. This was great experience for historians of all levels. There really was something for everyone who went. You could stop to read all the information but many of the things were self explanatory and you could tell what they were simply from looking at the objects on display.
  • This museum was really well done, the displays were informative and interesting. If you speak English, you will have no trouble at this museum, as all of the displays are also in Icelandic and English. I would recommend visiting at the beginning of your Iceland trip, it will provide a lot of background for everything that you will see.
  • If you a one stop shop to learn the history of Iceland, this is place to go! Two stories of history from when Vikings first arrived around the year 900 AD until now. They cover everything and include thousands of artifacts that have been uncovered. I spent the whole afternoon there and didn't even get the chance to read all the signs. A pass for the museum also grants you a free pass to the Nordic House not too far from there. They've also got lockers to hold your bag, included in the ticket price. If you like history this is a must go!
  • Super interesting museum that outlines the history of Iceland - from its start to modern day Iceland. I learned a lot while at the museum because everything there was very interesting...especially the skeletal remains that they have on display.
  • Well maintained and interesting museum of the history of Iceland from settlement to present. Easily spent 3-4 hours here. Highlights include Viking era artifacts, sediment from the many volcanic eruptions, and exhibits in the Norse/Danish-era rule.
