Iceladic history comes to life at National Museum of Iceland, founded in 1863. • Spent a couple of hours here when we first arrived in Reykjavik. Very interesting if you're into history and vikings. A lot of very well preserved artefacts.  more »
  • I enjoyed this so much that after the excellent tour I stayed for another several hours to see the exhibits more closely. Numerous interactive displays that help explain Iceland's history. The special....  more »
  • This is a smaller museum by my standards (I'm used to Chicago and NY) but extremely well done. The two floors pack in a lot of information we learned so much about the history of Iceland. It took...  more »

  • Small but Iceland is a small country. Two floors cover its history from settlement to the 20th century. There is a nice selection of artifacts with some truly beautiful samples of ecclesiastical art. Gift shop is small but has a good selection. Admission here gets you into two other museums.
  • The National Museum of Iceland is obviously curated and managed by brilliant people. The collection is beautiful, thorough, and laid out in a way that it keeps you interested and active the whole way through. It stops just short of the interactive hands on games and activities found in child centric museums, but it was way more interactive and engaging than it had any right to be. I am particularly interested in Norse mythology and runes and I wanted to be disappointed that the museum was way more centered on the Christian aspects of Iceland but I couldn't be because it made it very clear why it was laid out the way it was and it was clear what kinds of artifacts I would be seeing as soon as I walked in. If you like museums, history, learning, or just getting to know the culture of a place, I highly encourage a visit.
  • Large facility with many artifacts. Well presented. Tons of information. The focus is not on the settlement period, so a visit to a settlement museum is recommended. The space is well used. The multimedia presentations are wonderful.
  • Very small museum but then Iceland doesn’t have a big population. The most interesting bit is the “settlement” era but the rest of the museum is rather disappointing. Very expensive for what it offers. Better places to spend your money on.
  • We had a free guided tour as it was the culture day of Iceland. It was brilliant. However, it is definitely worth it to pay the admission fee because the museum is actually very well put together and you will surely learn a lot about the history of Iceland. This is the first museum we visited on our trip to Iceland and it helped us to have a good idea about how Iceland was settled and progressed. If you only have time to visit one museum in Reykjavík, this is the one!
