Learn about the history and living conditions of Icelandic people from the age of settlement to the present day at Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition. The museum features the archaeological remains of a Viking settlement, an open-air museum, a maritime museum, a photography museum, and pieces of modern landscape art. See some of Iceland's oldest relics (from 871 CE), and the tenth-century longhouse, parts of which are preserved in their original locations. The museum's interactive multimedia technology brings the ancient Viking ways to life at the settlement exhibit. The maritime museum includes fishermen's bunk beds, a mock dock, and a former coast guard vessel that rescued many ships' crews from sinking. Take a guided tour of the museum alongside original houses, a small farm, and through a village square. Went to the museum with 10 and 12 year old children. All together a nice experience, seeing how Icelandic families lived in the last centuries. Nice to be able to walk around in the houses and to go a...  more »

The museum is marketed as kid friendly (not what we experienced) and has a great play area with viking dress up and toy weapons. Our 3 young boys (1,4,6) were playing and we were asked/told to be quiet. We didn't think they were being particularly noisy. Ruined our visit and we decided to leave. We were given a full refund.

Get a 24 hours Reykjavik City card and you will get to visit the museum for free. This is one of the most enjoyable museum visits I have ever been to. A lot interactive modules to help you understand the history, excellent use if Digital content for easy understanding. You even get to play with the bone puzzles of animals in its small animal exhibit. Well worth the time spent.

If you have an hour to kill in Reykjavik, and are interested in the history of the city and of Iceland, you should check this out. All the interpretive materials were well done. As per most museums or exhibits of this kind, there was a lot of reading (signs are in both Icelandic and English). Some interactive elements.

Excellent museum for those who enjoy history. All indoors, built around the excavation of one of the oldest known buildings in Iceland. Excellent info (in English) to explain the site and it's significance.

A lot of information about the earliest settlers of Iceland. The remains of a settlement are in the building. The interactive part is not that special.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
