Grotta Lighthouse, Reykjavik

4.6
Grotta Lighthouse is a popular recreational area and bird sanctuary, and a good spot for catching the northern lights. It also offers views over parts of the city and the whole bay. Cross a small, sandy bank to get to the lighthouse, but beware of the rising tide. If you come by car, you can wait for the aurora borealis in the little parking lot. On clear nights, the show may go on for hours, but you have to be patient waiting for it to start. The tourist-friendly facilities include restrooms and a bar. • It is a bit far from downtown but worth the drive or bus ride. It was supposed to be closed until July 15th, but upon my visit in late July, it was still closed off. There is a rock path to the lighth...  more »

  • Island tiny and charming, access at low tide (and forbidden between May 15 and July 15 for the protection of birds). A source of hot water to soak your feet 300 m bonus.

  • Didn't expect to find a dark enough place so accessible from the city. There isn't much light pollution here less the cars when it's aurora season! Do be careful though as people driving in and out may just stop abruptly when the lights come out to play. Also the walk over to the lighthouse area is easier at low tides. Don't get stranded!
  • Absolutely magnificent view, need too be place ,slightly off centre Reykjavik but very grateful place to be
  • Good place to walk and relax on sunny days. Peace and quiet.
  • Lighthouse at the end of Peninsula. Perfect place for the sunsets.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
