  • I'm kind of a museum buff, and the fact Culture house was included with the National museum purchase makes it worth visiting. You won't be wowed by any means. The art is eclectic and focuses on Icelandic artists. Some of the artifacts in the museum are interesting as they give an optic into Icelandic culture. Would I come here as an sole museum visit, no. But, if you are heading to the National Museum which was well worth it, a visit to The Culture house would suit well.
  • Good museum in many respects, though sometimes with a coherent progression. Some of Iceland's great art is here, along with some very useful historical context, and some of the most interesting documents existing about the history of the country. The layout was at times confusing, and some exhibits didn't seem to have enough written justification. Our favourite exhibit was on the 18th century census. 1.5 hours.
  • Art pieces and cultural artifacts haphazardly put together. No thematic element to tie things together, which if that was the purpose, failed to leave any memorable mark to the city. It had beautiful design and was a truly unique building.
  • Ágúst 19 heimsótti ég Safnahúsið í Reykjavík. Kennarin Ragna útskýrði landið, fólkið, menninguna með skilningi og kímni. Það var tími mjög þess virði! A good docent can make all the difference. I speak from experience, having visit Pompeii (great docent!), Herculaneum (not so good), Morgan Library in NYC (excellent Edgar Alan Poe tour). On August 19, my last day in Iceland before flying out, I was extremely lucky and privileged. Ragna, the docent, conducted a tour of each floor with insight the land, people, and culture of Iceland as it pertained to the exhibit. She did this all with insight, humor, and of course, with great language skill. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative tour. - Charles J. Bondi, Gaithersburg MD.
  • A but of a mish mash of historical things. If there was some coherent story or objective I missed it. Between this and the main museum, I think that Iceland has failed to tell personal stories or to relate what real life was about in historical iceland. This is a missed opportunity as the stories that I have read in various historical novels have been so compelling yet the museums are capturing nothing of the harshness of life in early Iceland.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
