Bridge Between Continents, Reykjavik

3.8
Cross the rift supposedly separating Europe and North America by walking over Bridge Between Continents. A thin, steel deck in the middle of nowhere lies across the point where two tectonic plates are diverging. "Welcome to America" and "Welcome to Europe" signs greet you as you cross. The gorge below the bridge is not very deep or dangerous, so you can easily walk through and pass under the bridge. Notice the engraved padlocks on the fence, which symbolize the love of couples who visited the bridge. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Reykjavik holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Bridge Between Continents and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This was the first attraction or fun thing we did in Iceland. After picking up our car rental and grabbing a quick breakfast, I went into my TripAdvisor app and got directions for our first morning's ...  more »
  • Interesting photo opportunity! Just a small footbridge but pretty amazing to be standing between two continents.  more »
  • I have to confess that I am biased about this place having a degree in geology. One of the main reasons I wanted to go to Iceland was to see where the plates are moving apart so for me it was fascinat...  more »

  • There's not a lot here to see here, but it's an interesting visual to help convey the uniqueness of bridging two continental plates. It also sort of positions Iceland as a bridge between Europe and the US....which seems an appropriate analogy to me. I wouldn't recommend going way out of your way to visit, but it's not a bad add-on before checking back into the airport.
  • Interesting location where it is possible to view the mid Atlantic ridge up close with a bridge spanning both sides. It is also possible to walk along fault line and be amazed at this awesome feature as well as explore the volcanic landscape close by. Access is easy with a short walk from the nearby car park.
  • Another great Icelandic attraction, Iceland is the only place in the world where you can see the meeting or parting of two tectonic plates on land, that's pretty impressive and all free to park and view.
  • Known as Miðlína, this is a tourist-spot through and through and usually the sort of thing I abhor, but I can't help but really love it. It's a great destination on a first-day kick-off of a tour around the Reykjanes Peninsula, and a early hint at the sort of rift to be seen at Þingvellir.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
