Kleifarvatn, Reykjanes Peninsula

#4 of 10 in Parks in Reykjanes Peninsula
Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, situated in the southern part of the peninsula. It is located on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The lake has no visible water coming in or going out as most of its water comes and leaves underground. The lake can be reached via a track, and there are two areas with high temperature that can be found not far from it: Seltún/Krýsuvík and another to the east. The lake's greatest depth is 97 m. After the 2000 Iceland earthquakes, the lake began to diminish, and 20% of its surface has since disappeared. The novel Kleifarvatn by Icelandic writer Arnaldur Indriðason was named after the lake.

  • This was our last stop on our self driven day trip around the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is a beautiful blue lake that is so huge it looks like the sea! You drive past this on a main road and it is free ...  more »

  • This lake had several points to pull off and take short hikes. The views are great without the crowds on the Golden Circle tours.  more »

  • I had a dry suit training at Kleifarvatn. Water comes from underground so even if I had lots of water during a training, it was okay. In July, I could see many of lupine and other flowers. It's also beautiful.
  • I was there in February with couple new friends and it is the most magical place I've been to in a while. This lake and the mountains covered in snow is so beautiful! Especially on a sunny day. Memories I'll never forget.
  • Beautiful and wild
  • A lake that is worth stopping to admire the view and solidified lava flows that lie along the adjacent street. Not worth coming on purpose just to see him. Tip: there are several points at which stay with the machine without problems. the road leading to this Lake from Reykjavik is unpaved for a small portion (to October 2016) but equally practicable with 2WD

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
