Askja is a caldera situated in a remote part of the central highlands of Iceland. The name Askja refers to a complex of nested calderas within the surrounding Dyngjufjöll mountains, which rise to 1510m, askja meaning box or caldera in IcelandicLocationThe region is only accessible for a few months of the year. Being situated in the rain shadow to the northeast of the Vatnajökull glacier, the area receives only about 450 mm of rainfall annually. The area was used during training for the Apollo program to prepare astronauts for the lunar missions. Their main objective in Askja was to study geology.EruptionsAskja was virtually unknown until the tremendous eruption which started on March 29, 1875. Especially in the eastern fjords of Iceland, the ashfall was heavy enough to poison the land and kill livestock. Ash, or tephra from this eruption was wind-blown to Norway and Sweden. The eruption triggered a substantial wave of emigration from Iceland. Another less well-known eruption occurred in the early Holocene, ca 11,000 years ago. Tephra from this eruption has been found in south-east Sweden, Northern Ireland and north Norway. The last eruption of Askja was in 1961.

  • When you go to the Interior, be sure to take a trip to the crater of Viti. Swimming in the crater in 26 degrees warm water is worth it. The man had nearly přizabije sliding down, but experience is the bomb. Of course, the whole caldera is breathtaking and when we rejoice as small children.

  • Lake Askia definitely is nice and there is a small walk of about 2.5 km. But the area of askia is really hard to get to, no road, river crossings and really nothing around. It takes at least 2 days there and back. To do only if the weather is good, otherwise the fatigue of the journey is not worthwhile and should focus on other destinations more accessible and equally impressive. I advise against going there

  • At the moment I think it's my favorite place of this trip. A short walk from the parking lot to get on a huge Lake that makes mirror with the mountains. On the right a smaller of a unusual blue. We went swimming, warm water for the region of 28 degrees and even enjoy being alone for the Icelandic tradition which is to bathe naked beautiful morning but pay attention to the roads to get there, if you are at ease with the Fords take the f88 with the d econd which is 40 cm of depth otherwise the F910 and F905 much easier at the Fords level but much more rugged road.

  • Great place to go for a swim
  • Very cool place Went there and was awesome planing on going again.
  • Long road but worth it. Gorgeous view. Have very good shoes and a walking stick if you want to get to the Viti lake for a dip in 28 C water. It is very, very slippery.
  • Knee deep snow in August, against a headwind. Be prepared. Another great sight in Iceland
  • Nice place
