Krafla Lava Fields, Lake Myvatn
(4.6/5 based on 460 reviews on the web)
Experience the rising steam and bubbling hot lava of a real volcano at Krafla Lava Fields. These fields include the Krafla volcano, one of the most well-known volcanoes in Iceland. A local power station uses the geothermal energy coming from the steam of the volcano. If you would like to hike the 10 km (6.2 mi) around these fields, you can choose from two trail options. Many recommend doing both routes, as they are equally scenic and take only about an hour each. Don't worry about eruptions, though: no dangerous volcanic activity has occurred in this area since 1984. Krafla Lava Fields is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Reykjahlid Edition.

  • The Krafla volcanic area is located 10 km northeast of Lake Myvatn and is accessible by a road in good condition. Coming from Lake Myvatn, must take road 1 towards Egillstaddir and turn left just after the Hverir geothermal area. You can circumnavigate the Viti crater (a bit disappointing) discover the area active for Leirhnjúkur, much more interesting. A signposted walk to circumnavigate this last in about an hour. The décor is disconcerting: cast of lava very recent and still smoldering, acidic Lakes, volcanic vents, etc. The site is not at the height of the Landmannalaugar but merit of course a visit if one travels in the North of the Iceland, as the visit can be coupled on the same day with the Hverir geothermal area.

  • Very nice colours and there is a warm water river with a shower in this area. It is almost surreal t see this place.
  • We drove through and stopped a few places. It seems to go on forever and is something you just have to see. There are lots of interesting sites if you are willing to walk. Some are easy walks and some...  more »
