Krafla Lava Fields, Reykjahlid

Nature / Park · Wildlife Area
Experience the rising steam and bubbling hot lava of a real volcano at Krafla Lava Fields. These fields include the Krafla volcano, one of the most well-known volcanoes in Iceland. A local power station uses the geothermal energy coming from the steam of the volcano. If you would like to hike the 10 km (6.2 mi) around these fields, you can choose from two trail options. Many recommend doing both routes, as they are equally scenic and take only about an hour each. Don't worry about eruptions, though: no dangerous volcanic activity has occurred in this area since 1984. • We, family of 4 with two young kids, had a great walk in this awesome lava field. Part of the walk is easily accessible, if you want to take the bigger loop it becomes more adventurous. Highly...  more »

  • The site had limited access so I just climbed up the first crater to see from above the beautiful turquoise water that fills it. I imagine that also the remaining part of the path would have been great to see.
  • One of the most awesome places I saw on my trip to Iceland and my favorite sight in the Myvatn area. Takes a bit of a walk from the free parking lot (about 30 minutes one way), but it is worth it. From what I read, the lava flow is about the size of Manhattan, and I believe it. The lava is still steaming!!!!! Amazing. You cannot miss this sight.
  • One of the best places we visited in Iceland where we could really see how lave fields are shapes and stretched between the mountains. Really peaceful place. You can spend a long time walking around there to actually see the amazing views. It's nothing that you stop 5 minutes at to take a picture and move on.
  • Great place to walk around between lava fields. There are some trail options so it wasn't too busy. We went there early June and some trails still had snow on them so they can be slippery.
  • Simply amazing to see theses lava fields. Do a full hike here
