Krafla Lava Fields, Lake Myvatn
Categories: Wildlife Areas, Nature & Parks
Experience the rising steam and bubbling hot lava of a real volcano at Krafla Lava Fields. These fields include the Krafla volcano, one of the most well-known volcanoes in Iceland. A local power station uses the geothermal energy coming from the steam of the volcano. If you would like to hike the 10 km (6.2 mi) around these fields, you can choose from two trail options. Many recommend doing both routes, as they are equally scenic and take only about an hour each. Don't worry about eruptions, though: no dangerous volcanic activity has occurred in this area since 1984. Krafla Lava Fields is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Reykjahlid Edition.

Well worth a visit. If you're prepared to walk or climb you'll get the full benefits of what is in the area. Beautiful and humbling at just how powerful nature can be.
