Experience the rising steam and bubbling hot lava of a real volcano at Krafla Lava Fields. These fields include the Krafla volcano, one of the most well-known volcanoes in Iceland. A local power station uses the geothermal energy coming from the steam of the volcano. If you would like to hike the 10 km (6.2 mi) around these fields, you can choose from two trail options. Many recommend doing both routes, as they are equally scenic and take only about an hour each. Don't worry about eruptions, though: no dangerous volcanic activity has occurred in this area since 1984. Really amazing, otherworldly. It is so easy to see the liquid lava flow still in the black and bare stones, so it is cool to walk over them.

As of the 2nd May you have to hike though some snow to get here. It is very easy to do but may not be for everyone. But reminded me of game of thrones with all the snow, so I loved it. To be fair you could just do the hverir lava fields

One of my favourite short trails in Iceland. Be careful walking on the wooden path, higher up many beams were broken in the middle.
