Hverir, Lake Myvatn

4.7
Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
Leave behind the comforts of civilization at Hverir, where the power of nature rules. Few countries compare to Iceland when it comes to volcanic activity, and this field of fumaroles and hot springs is a prime example. Experience the relentless undrground energy, visible in the columns of steam, boiling water, and bubbling mud pots. No plants or animals can survive in this highly acidic environment, but you will see an abundance of colorful minerals. Walk up to the vents and pools, taking care to stay safe. Wear comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting muddy. Note that the steam and smell of sulfur might be uncomfortable for some. • It could be a place in hell - impressive colors and mud holes, smoking hills and a terrible stench - by all means look at it, but don't forget a perfumed scarf, otherwise you can easily get sick.  more »
  • We were kinda in rush to reach Mývatn but we decided to stop to let the kids running! As a Geologist this small geothermal field is just amazing. You can find so many little details and my kids in...  more »
  • With the smell of sulfur and mist and mud at your feet, it felt like we were on a different planet (in a good way). Cool place to see the thermic pools, highly suggest.  more »

  • Maytn areas another cool attraction - Must visit it when you’re in Iceland. You will really like this attraction because this is one of the unique sulfur geothermal openings. What do you find here you cannot find anywhere else in Iceland. Please note the weather can change in a minute so even though if the weather looks sunny please wear a rain gear while walking or hiking and it will be a great savior for you.
  • Very Awesome Place to go. It is Hot and Smelly, Different and Exciting, and also One of a Kind to Iceland and a Tourist Hot Spot. Can spend a bit of Time Here if Not on a Schedule. Lots to do in this Area of Iceland.
  • Most of us will never experience what it would be to set foot on another celestial body like Neil Armstrong did, we're for now limited to being in awe when seeing photos from other planets. But visiting Hverir and many other places in Iceland might be the closest you'll get to the feeling of having your jaw drop to the ground or your breath taken away. And I'm not just talking about the foul smell from the hotsprings. This place is like nothing I've ever seen before and I was in awe. Stunning!
  • It’s very cool place.but everywhere is mud ,especially after rainy day! Anyway it’s worthy to see this! You can see the ice mountain and hot ground at the same time. So wonderful nature!
  • An amazing place to stop by! You can literally see lots of steam rising up from hot mud pots and geysers... and we also watched northern lights here during the night!
