Dettifoss, Lake Myvatn
Categories: Waterfalls, Nature & Parks
Dettifoss is thought to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. At 100 m (328 ft) wide and 44 m (131 ft) tall, it is also one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland. Part of Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, this natural beauty is on the popular Diamond Circle route. Walk the well-maintained footpaths to find the best viewpoints; walkways next to the waterfall allow you to get quite close. Hear the thunderous sound that this magnificent waterfall makes and feel the ground tremble under your feet. Due to the water's mist reacting with the sun, rainbows often form over the waterfall. Be respectful of any paths that are blocked off; this is most likely due to weather conditions and is for your safety. We really enjoyed this waterfall. It's not too far off the ring road and the walk from the parking lot was really easy and quite scenic. The path comes out at the top of waterfall so you don't really ... read more »

Arrived here late after a long day of sightseeing around Myvatn. We weren't disappointed however. Strong falls and worth walking to Selfoss too, more picturesque
From my point of view is it one of the best waterfalls in Iceland, not the Gulfoss. This place is as well not easy to reach but the longer route from north is the better way you can use! There are tourists there but regards the difficult way not the mass like the Gulfoss. So, I would recommend to visit this place!
An amazingly powerful waterfall. I would say one of the best in Iceland. It's awe inspiring. It's about a ten minute walk to the waterfall. And then you can walk down to the smaller waterfall as well.
You have to drive about 30km on gravel roads to get to this waterfall, but it is so worth it! It is a truly majestic waterfall! A must see!
Powerful waterfall. Short drive and walk to one side of waterfall. Other side requires a long drive on an F Track road, but well worth the drive! A must see! Made famous by the movie Prometheus.
Huge waterfall and scenic canyon. Be warned that the dirt road (rt 864) leading to the waterfall is about 30 km long and is not well maintained. We were able to make it in a small car, but it wasn't easy. A 4x4 is recommended.
