Dettifoss, Lake Myvatn

(4.8/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Dettifoss is thought to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. At 100 m (328 ft) wide and 44 m (131 ft) tall, it is also one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland. Part of Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, this natural beauty is on the popular Diamond Circle route. Walk the well-maintained footpaths to find the best viewpoints; walkways next to the waterfall allow you to get quite close. Hear the thunderous sound that this magnificent waterfall makes and feel the ground tremble under your feet. Due to the water's mist reacting with the sun, rainbows often form over the waterfall. Be respectful of any paths that are blocked off; this is most likely due to weather conditions and is for your safety. • It is worth to go there. However, we had very cold weather and were sprayed at the second waterfall with spray.

  • In a country of thousands of waterfalls, this is one of the best. It is absolutely worth the drive to get to it. I only wish we had more time to go to both sides as I would have like a little better v...  more »
  • The Dettifoss was pretty impressive. Unfortunately a driveway were in February and spot a few hiking trails due to the weather conditions. Still a great experience and absolutely recommended!

  • Dettifoss is the most beautiful waterfall in all of Iceland. It's very impressive and the water vapor often creates a rainbow above the waterfall. The path to get there is very bad, though, in May at least. The path was flooded over a large part and we had to figure a way around.
  • Dettifoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. It is a very impressive sight as both the fall and the volume is extensive. It is often disputed which side is more impressive. My opinion after visiting the fall many times is the east side. Anyway both sides are impressive and it is more than worth it if you are traveling the ring road to take the loop and visit Dettifoss.
  • The road leading here was horrendous. Tons of bumps, wash-boarded surface, and gravel everywhere. But the actual gorge is huge and impressive. The waterfalls are definitely in my top 3 of Iceland, higher than Gullfoss. Bathrooms, free entrance, and free parking are also great.
  • Route 862 is paved road and 10mins walk from parking lot - view is like Niagara @ Canadian side so can see fully. Route 864 is gravel(bumpy) road parking close to foss - view is like Niagara @ US side so you can get close to foss. I went there at very harsh weather windy & snowy in Sept but foss itself is a blast. There is another fall nearby called Selfoss you might want to see it as well.
  • Europe's largest waterfall. Amazing views and cool to see such a powerful waterfall! We spent less than 30 minutes here - mostly taking photos and enjoying the views.
