Aldeyjarfoss, Lake Myvatn

#5 of 11 in Outdoors in Lake Myvatn
The Aldeyjarfoss waterfall is situated in the north of Iceland at the northern part of the Sprengisandur Highland Road which means it is to be found within the Highlands of Iceland. One of the most interesting features of the waterfall is the contrast between the black basalt columns and the white waters of the fall. In this, it is similar to the much smaller Icelandic waterfall Svartifoss in Skaftafell. The river Skjálfandafljót drops here from a height of 20 m. The basalt belongs to a lava field called Frambruni or Suðurárhraun, hraun being the Icelandic designation for lava.

  • No hyperbole there -- the entire landscape is to yourself as barely anyone goes there. You can climb all the way down if you want or just admire it from afar. Easily the best waterfall in Iceland -- a...  more »

  • Falls are 2 km into the interior. You can get there with a car, but do NOT try to go farther. The rock formations are what mak the falls spectacular. Another advantage is it is not overrun with tourists.
  • Best place, especially if you are there to see the Sun set. You need 4by4 car. Probably you will make it wilh normal as well but it takes around 40min to get three from minimum from the main road because it is an F road. We also camped there on the top, there are also toilet facilities.
  • Awesome place but beware you need a proper 4x4 to reach. There is also a sheep gate which one need to open and close to reach the waterfall. This does not mean the road is closed however.
  • This is a semi hidden fall in the sense that it's off the beaten path, but well worth the effort to get here! Follow the 842 south till you hit a farm and a sign that leads over a bridge saying it's an F road. Two things can happen here, you can either park your car (looks like two spots) on the grass and walk the rest of the way, takes 45min-1hr to reach the falls. After looking at tripadvisor and some blogs we also for safe measure placed a note with our number/name on the windshield letting the nearby farmer know our intentions. When you follow the path make sure to LOCK THE GATE behind you (a carabiner). OR It does say it's an F road, and I'm not going to tell you to drive your little Kia Rio down it...but you totally could. We did not but a little non 4x4 car drove past us all the way down to the falls. If you don't want to do that, you can take your car past the gate (LOCK IT) and across the bridge and there is an actual parking lot with kiosks about the falls. Latrines near the falls as well.
  • For me the most impressive waterfall in Iceland, just because of its sheer water power. The whole landscape looks like Mordor and the rock formations with its basalt columns is just unique! Since its a bit more remote than other waterfalls, its not too crowded even in summer. An absolute must for all travellers!
