  • One of the earlier reviewers has the history of the locale, said much better than I could. I had read about this place, and had just passed the large WC in the middle of nowhere when I remembered...

  • Laufskálavarða is quite a bizarre sight, really. On a lava ridge between the Hólmsá and Skálmá Rivers to the east of the village of Vik on Iceland’s south east coast, there is an odd attraction...

  • Striking place full of nothingness as far as the eye can see. Not this place in particular but the whole area. The feeling of uncanny emptiness can't be captured in a picture. This place in particular has an interesting formation of rocks.
  • Visited in July 2022. Handy stop to use the washroom (for a small fee) along the Ring Road. You can go up the stairs of the washroom building to get a view of the surrounding area. The lava field was interesting, but not the most exciting thing to see in Iceland compared to the other sites in the area. I would still recommend a quick stop, however, because it's conveniently located and a unique landscape. Parking is free and no one was there when we visited, so it was an enjoyable and quiet visit.
  • A really interesting spot for Cairns people have made over many years. Some really old Cairns that are amazing to see on the vast barren plain. Feels like some must be hundreds of years old. The location has a paid Water Closet (300) and a free (tips welcome) deck to walk up to get a wide view of the whole area. Easy parking and right off Highway 1. I recommend it if you are passing by the area.
  • Rather relaxing spot to take rest in the middle of the long drive. The stones were likely arranged by the Royal Society of Putting Things on Top of Other Things or maybe sheep.
  • Very clean rest stop with an interesting, modern design. You can climb the stairs to the rooftop of the restroom to get better views of the surrounding landscape. There are two picnic tables and plenty of parking area. Bathrooms cost 300 ISK. The coin slot was not working when we were there, but the contactless payment and card reader were.
