ABOUT LAVA CENTRE

LAVA - Iceland Volcano and Earthquake Centre is an interactive experience that will reveal the epic forces of nature that shape our planet and created Iceland. You will literally feel the power beneath our feet and experience our biggest earthquake. You will feel small, you can touch, you can feel and you will see the "fiery heart" of Iceland.

Some of the experiences are not for the faint of heart. LAVA is a must-see. It’s a destination where you can learn, feel and taste. It's located in the town Hvolsvöllur in the heart of South Iceland and “within an arm’s reach” of many of the country's top tourist destinations.

LAVA is located by the foothills of our greatest volcanos on Iceland's Ring Road. LAVA will provide you with varied scenes and hands-on learning experiences, as well as a great 360˚ viewing platform that overlooks the great volcanos of Eyjafjallajökull, Katla and Hekla along with the beautiful Westman Islands off the south coast.

LAVA will be the HUB for daytrips and tours in South Iceland and a Tourist Information Center for the region. LAVA will include a souvenir shop, restaurant and a cozy coffeehouse.

  • We had some time this day and so stopped here, even though it did seem a bit touristy. Still though, we found it informative. The interactive displays were a bit cheesy, but also added some fun to...  more »
  • The lava centre offers an excellent overview of volcanic activities in Iceland. It is brand new and the exhibits are comprehensive. The movie is quite impressive. A must-go place.  more »

  • Very interactive, modern museum. Not only simple knowledge, but really simply delivered. I study geology, and I wasn't bored there, that means something ;) The possibility to feel earthquake, visualization of Iceland creation... that was something! Highly recommend!
  • Unexpected stop that was a great addition. Good film to start, then an interactive center to learn about volcanoes and earthquakes. Finally, an observation deck. Restaurant was also quite good with a selection of veg and meat items. Recommend
  • Interesting and educational place. Nice place to go when there is typical Icelandic weather. The exhibition is nice, but you'll be done with it in half an hour. The movie is 10-15 minutes and shows recent eruptions and the consequences.
  • Honestly one of the best and most interactive museums I've ever been to. Absolutely must see! Especially if you've never experienced an earthquake ;)
  • Wow, great place to learn about volcanic activities. Loved the interactive exhibits. Truly worth the stop. Would love to give it 10 stars!!
