Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, 128 meters. It is located in Hengifossá in Fljótsdalshreppur, East Iceland. It is surrounded by basaltic strata with thin, red layers of clay between the basaltic layers. Fossilized trunks of coniferous trees, sensitive to cold, and lignite, which depict warmer climates during the latter part of Tertiary. Further down the Hengifossá river is Litlanesfoss, notable for the columnar jointed volcanics around it. Hengifoss is the most popular hiking site in East Iceland with path leading from the parking lot to the falls. It takes 40-60 minutes to walk to the waterfall. To visit Hengifoss and other attractions in Egilsstadir, use our Egilsstadir route planner.

Hengifoss waterfall lies at the side of gravel road 931. It is an impressive stepped waterfall and you can take a steep 2 km hike up to the top. My husband and I returned after the first viewpoint, be... more »
Une cascade grandiose, même de loin ! Assurément le plus grand regret de mon voyage en Islande, nous sommes arrivé trop tard et trop fatigué sur ce site pour aller au bout de notre randonnée... de plu... more »A Grand waterfall, even from far away! Certainly the biggest regret of my trip to Iceland, we arrived too late and too tired on this site to go after our hike... more time was not looking good... :( For access to this waterfall, take the road No. 931 at the level of Fellabaer. There is a small parking lot and a panel of explanation. The path to climb (Yes, the go to the waterfall wins!) is laid out (and current planning when we were there, October 2017), bridge, markets... the hike is very nice in a splendid setting, we have even worked with the sheep. Before getting to Hengifoss, you can admire Litlanesfoss and these basaltic organ. We have not been at the end of our market but we still admired Hengifoss which even remotely, is beautiful. 羊の糞が所々あったので、暖... more »You can't go to the bottom of the waterfall when the snow is on the ground. So great for going up the mountain at a waterfall from the top and going on on the ground soft scaffolding is not so good (some track pavement had signs and preparing them better? ). Good distance and views as aiming the goal falls did Hengifoss is too much not feel special waterfall, hiking. I had some sheep droppings, warm days coming up sheep in may? Midpoint of the starting Hengifoss waterfall is another and the waterfalls around Canyon like a waterfall over there was like personally.
Nice walk to a cool waterfall that is far enough away from anything that we were nearly the only people there. We were there at the end of March, and there was still quite a lot of snow, but managed to get almost right up to the bottom of the waterfall with just regular hiking boots. The walk itself probably took around 30 minutes up. Everyone else stopped quite a distance away from the waterfall and took photos, but there were tracks heading closer, where it got a little steeper, and we followed them without any problems.
Notable for being the third highest of the many waterfalls of Iceland. Nice walk up to the waterfall: You walk a moderate track past Litlanesfoss, probably a more beautiful waterfall than Hengifoss. Track can be slippery after rain.
Nice and easy hike. Untill litlanesfoss halfway up it's pretty steep but an easy path. After that it's more level. At the end the path gets rocky and muddy. Overall way worth the 2 hours
Rather easy hike up to falls. Nothing most people can't accomplish. Should take 1.5 hours return. Will be a busy enough trail in tourist season. Parking lot is medium sized, but will be full depending on timing. Great views of falls available.
Nice waterfall. The best thing about this one? You cannot get directly to it... Or you shouldn't I'd say :) Path to it is a great challenge, as you have to cross the river at least 3 times over some slippery rocks, find flthe best spot to stay dry etc... Real challenge and fun! :)
