Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, 128 meters. It is located in Hengifossá in Fljótsdalshreppur, East Iceland. It is surrounded by basaltic strata with thin, red layers of clay between the basaltic layers. Fossilized trunks of coniferous trees, sensitive to cold, and lignite, which depict warmer climates during the latter part of Tertiary. Further down the Hengifossá river is Litlanesfoss, notable for the columnar jointed volcanics around it. Hengifoss is the most popular hiking site in East Iceland with path leading from the parking lot to the falls. It takes 40-60 minutes to walk to the waterfall.

  • We were here in January with plenty of snow and cold. It took about an hour to hike up there and it was super beautiful even though it is winter. Some of the waterfall is frozen, but it does nothing at all. We were the absolute only thing on the entire trip up and down and it made the course more unique

  • The upstream market is very pleasant - that one is not concerned about getting dirty with mud. The view is pleasant, as the stop at the first waterfall (note the geology of places) as the end of the course to the Hengifoss waterfall. 1:15 round trip

  • This is on your way east from Egilsstadir and is a great place to stop. For whatever reason it is not very touristy/busy. The hike is long and steep at times. However, the views are great as you get t...  more »

  • Nice and easy hike. Untill litlanesfoss halfway up it's pretty steep but an easy path. After that it's more level. At the end the path gets rocky and muddy. Overall way worth the 2 hours
  • Nice waterfall. The best thing about this one? You cannot get directly to it... Or you shouldn't I'd say :) Path to it is a great challenge, as you have to cross the river at least 3 times over some slippery rocks, find flthe best spot to stay dry etc... Real challenge and fun! :)
  • Rather easy hike up to falls. Nothing most people can't accomplish. Should take 1.5 hours return. Will be a busy enough trail in tourist season. Parking lot is medium sized, but will be full depending on timing. Great views of falls available.
  • Wonderful waterfall. Very steep hike going to the waterfall but otherwise once you get halfway to the viewing point...you can make it the rest! FYI--You do not get to walk right up to the waterfall due to the river/rocks.
  • The hike to this waterfall takes around 1h if you take it slow, and it is somewhat steep at times but definitely manageable. What I liked about the path is that it crosses the river coming down from the waterfall many times. You can get a first glimpse of the waterfall circa halfway through your hike. This is because the water is falling from very high up. There are possibilities here and there to take a little detour, just do not go too far off the beaten path.
