Outdoor Activity
Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, 128 meters. It is located in Hengifossá in Fljótsdalshreppur, East Iceland. It is surrounded by basaltic strata with thin, red layers of clay between the basaltic layers. Fossilized trunks of coniferous trees, sensitive to cold, and lignite, which depict warmer climates during the latter part of Tertiary. Further down the Hengifossá river is Litlanesfoss, notable for the columnar jointed volcanics around it. Hengifoss is the most popular hiking site in East Iceland with path leading from the parking lot to the falls. It takes 40-60 minutes to walk to the waterfall.

  • This place was a bit of our itinerary though we decided to make a small detour and it was totally worth it: the way towards the waterfall is not easy but the views we had are simply breathtaking. On t...  more »
  • As a non-climber was grinning when I saw quite a bit higher than the waterfall where the waterfall is. There is a clear information sign at the parking lot on the falls, the route and the surrounding area. You walk on a clear path in just over an hour to top, along the way are some benches and about half way you have the first baslat waterfall, a nice surprise and incentive to continue. The last part of the climb is about large rocks, so you at the foot of the Hengifoss. There you can see the greatness, the beautiful red stone layers and the force. The waterfall is hidden in a beautiful, Rocky Bowl. On the way back don't forget to enjoy the beautiful views of the "monster"-more.

  • Who wants however to the foot of the waterfall 3 x must cross the river. Very good grip and walking sticks to help. This concerns the last 200 meters for the 30 minutes should be scheduled. The climb is easy to deal with until the end of the trail, about 200 meters from the waterfall. Very rewarding on the road as the basaltic pillars.
