Religious Site
The Szeged Synagogue is a synagogue in Szeged, Hungary. It is a 1907 building designed by the Jewish Hungarian architect Lipót Baumhorn, whose work is considered to contain the finest examples of the unique fin de siècle Hungarian blending of Art Nouveau and Historicist styles sometimes known as Magyar style. It served Szeged's large Neolog community. The building's interior, with its 48.5m tall domed ceiling, draws on multiple historical styles to produce its overall Art Nouveau/Moorish Revival style. The rib-like wall above the organ has Gothic origins, while the columns supporting the galleries are Roman. The interior of the great dome, and all of the building's stained glass, are the work of the artist Miksa Róth.The design of the Torah Ark alludes to the Holy of Holies in the Temple of Solomon by using sittimwood from the banks of Nile, the wood called for in the building of the Temple of Solomon in 1 Kings. The hinges are in the shape of the Hyssop plant, a plant used in the ancient Temple service. The Szeged Synagogue is the second largest in Hungary after the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest, and the 4th largest in the world.

  • Visited the old and new synagogues via a tour guide from the Szeged Tourism office recently, which I highly recommend you do. Although there is plenty of information on the Internet already about these two synagogues, for 1,000 HUF (under £3) for a one hour tour with a tour guide that includes entrance fee to the new synagogue I would highly recommend a tour guide. The new synagogue has the WOW factor, both externally and internally. The blue colour scheme, bright;y painted windows, the overall size and history of the place is fascinating. There is a section that commemorates the Holocaust victims of the World War II concentration camps and sections of the tour that mention the trees outside, jewish torah, baby garden and painted windows; all of which are linked together through history. The new synagogue has recently been renovated and so now looks even more beautiful.
  • In spite of being in a small town in Hungary this is the 4th largest synagogue in the world. Impressive building!!
  • It's a beautiful, but a bit hidden by the vegetation around it.
  • Ok
  • Not very good
