Today, it is the main tourist attraction for visitors to Sümeg.
It is irregular in shape, and situated in a north-south orientation atop a mountain called "Castle Hill", 20 miles north of Lake Balaton. It has two towers, and is 125 metres long and 80 metres wide. This castle was originally built in the mid or late 13th century by Béla IV of Hungary, where he lived during the Mongolian invasion between 1241-1242. Later, it was presented as a gift to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Veszprém by Stephen V of Hungary.
In 1552, in response to the capture of Veszprém by the Turks, the castles was rebuilt and fortified to serve as a frontier fortress.
In 1713, after the Austrian occupation during Rákóczi's War for Independence, troops set the castle on fire.
During the 20th century, parts of the castle were restored.

  • Great place for a day trip. The castle is well reconstructed, lots of things to do and discover. They sell chimney cake inside, which is really delicious. Good games for the kids, and programs about every second hour.
  • Awesome castle. Many games for children, activities, reconstitutions, rehearsals : great for children. And very nice views and historic rooms for adults. Recommended.
  • This castle has always been one of my favourite places to visit, it's a classic medieval castle on top of a mountain with great architecture, feel and views of the surrounding areas. In addition now you can stay at the hotel by the foot of the mountain and watch a medieval tournament play presented by very talented performers.
  • Nicely renovated fortress but I missed the little pieces of information in parts of the buildings. The web page is not very informational, it does not say the truth about the regular daily programs.
  • Brilliant. Fantastic day out for adults and kids alike. Expect a bit of a climb, but not too much. Stunning views and excellent castle are worth it.
