Fire Tower (Tuztorony), Sopron

4.6
#1 of 24 in Things to do in Gyor-Moson-Sopron County
Don't miss the chance to visit Fire Tower (Tuztorony), one of the city's most notable landmarks. Built upon ancient Roman foundations, the base of the tower was a part of the city's walls and served as one of its gateways. After a major reconstruction in the 17th century, the tower obtained its current shape. When it was in use, guards on top of the tower had the job of watching for fires and approaching armies, and then notifying citizens of both. At the viewing platform, you too can admire the panoramas of the city and surrounding region. Various displays spread over multiple levels tell the story of the tower's history. To climb to the top you have to navigate quite a few steps, so this might not be well suited for visitors with mobility issues. Beautiful views of the city. The culture is also a great program for those interested in after, interest exhibited paintings, acélmetszek, rézmetszetek, etc. On the lower floor there is an exhibition of material found during the excavations are thought-provoking and exciting. :)

From this tower you have a nice view of Sopron. The climb us, only more difficult if there is oncoming traffic. The tower is illuminated at night and at 9.00 pm and at 10 pm is there a melody played and changed the lighting every 5 seconds in color. Worth to walk again in the evening.

In July 2017 year traveling with the whole family to Europe, looked into the small historic Hungarian town Sopron. Our goal in addition to CityWalk was climbing on the Fire Tower, located in the heart. Pleased with the relatively low price of tickets (around 400 rubles converted to forint). After overpowering the approximately 200 steps of the spiral staircase, we were upstairs, where a beautiful view opened at vintage tile roofs. The weather was hot, so a little breeze on the Tower allowed more comfortable exploring the town with a bird's-eye view. Often trees at different towers and comparing conditions climb on them, we can confidently say that the rise of the shopronskuju is very convenient for people of all ages. In General, seemed rather dull little Sopron, but this may have been due to the lack of the usual European fairs in central squares and renovations in the old part of the city. But the tower was great!

Interesting history in an amazing city next to the austrian border. Fantastic view to the city and amazing landscape from the tower.

Good place to look around but not worth much money. You can have a look around from surrounding high buildings for free.

Best historical place in city, but not ideal for tall people.
