Pannonhalma Abbey, Gyor
(3.7/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
A haven of faith and tranquility, Pannonhalma Abbey represents a historical monument that has lasted as long as Christianity in Hungary. Visit the Benedictine monastery founded in 996 CE, which is now one of the largest abbeys in the world. Learn about life in a monastic community, see the collection of medieval artifacts and artwork, and admire the herb house and botanical garden. The monastery also makes wine, and you'll have a chance to glimpse the production process and taste the final products. Religious and cultural events, such as exhibits and concerts, are regularly held at the abbey. Check online for the schedules. Multilingual audio tours are available, as well as a gift shop and a restaurant. Not all of the abbey is wheelchair-accessible, but special arrangements can be made for visitors with walking difficulties. • We learned a lot by taking the guided tour. However, we didn't get into the church, which I wanted to do. Seems like that the "holy grail", no pun intended.
