Valley of the Beautiful Women, Eger

4.2
#1 of 27 in Wineries in Hungary
Take a short trip out of the center of Eger and visit , one of Hungary's prime wine-making regions. The valley is covered with vineyards and features dozens of small wineries and wine cellars. Go on a shopping and tasting spree. Along the way, stop to chat with owners who will share stories about the region's history and trademark industry. The valley produces a wide range of wines, both red and white. Be sure to sample the region's most famous variety, Egri Bikaver, or Bull's Blood. In addition to wine, you can try a variety of local dishes, from cheese plates to elaborate Hungarian meals. All the wineries are located close to each other, so you can easily wander between them, even after a couple glasses. • Recommend ice wine and muskotaly. Wish I had bought more of the ice! If you have the chance, try it. The grapes are harvested in December after the first przymrozkach to bring out more sweetness. The owner of the wine cellar not bad anymore.

  • It's a really lovely little valley with wineries and few restaurants. Prices of wine are 2 to 6 euro per litre. Really good spot for relaxed tasting experience. Restaurants usually close around 9 pm m...  more »

  • Great place for wine enthusiasts with some cellars having incredible interiors. If you are not into drinking kr tasting however, your options are quickly limited. The location is also nice.
  • Lovely place, you can get drunk very easy 😆, as there is a lot of great wine tasting 😄 defentily recommended
  • The friendliest place in Hungary! There is more than one woman here: these ladies have legs; they are the wines... Which you will find if you look beyond the sweet rosey nose that dominates Eger... You will learn all about the Egri Bikavér and its alleged mytholigcal origins in Egri Vár in 1552, in the red stained beards of the defenders of Eger aginst the Turks... which turned out to not be Bulls Blood, but an almost limitless supply of beverage from below the besieged castle, keeping morale high against the invading hordes... also the Kékfrankos, no doubt named after the colour of the grape. While all the red wines here are very light, the Pinot Noirs seem to be opposite the norm... although some great specimens are to be found; also do not overlook the Syrah's and Cuvées. There are more than 30 small holdings to choose from, and if you taste enough you are bound to find some diamonds in the rough... which I will not ruin for you with a review ;-) A mandatory stop in Hungary, for current- and would-be wine lovers, in a wine district wild and unbound... bring your own containers and fill it from the barrel if you like, to your heat's content, on any budget, and enjoy it by a fire with strangers from all over...
  • A good place to visit, even in the off-high-season winter months. The wine shops offer a large variety of mostly red wines at an economical price, and there are several restaurants in the valley to choose from.
  • More than 20 wine caves proposing theirs products. Nice atmospher and good time 4-5 restaurants available.
