Fountain Landmark
See the iconic Matthias Fountain, one of the most photographed monuments in the capital city. Located in a courtyard of Buda Castle, the monument depicts Matthias Corvinus, a famed king, and his hunting party. Notice the king's coat of arms decorating the niche above the hunters. The bronze female figure to the right is Szép Ilonka, the young woman the king fell in love with while he was disguised as a commoner. When Szép Ilonka discovered his identity, she decided their love was impossible and died of a broken heart. She is immortalized in the fountain, forever looking at her lover. • We were walking around and I saw a small passage way to another court yard and found this fountain/sculpture. Amazing bronzes, worth seeing.  more »
  • From Roman I can only say that in part reminded me of our fontana di Trevi ... honestly nobody shot gave credit to beauty of this fountain and the richness of its details. The guide spoke of a courtship scene on a hunting trip that I had difficulty recognizing ... but no matter ... is so beautiful that you'd lose to enjoy their wealth. Turn around slowly and discover the many angles from which you can observe it. Limit yourself to only one snap front would be an outrage and still a waste. Seeing is believing.

  • The Matthias Fountain built in the western forecourt of Buda Palace was built in Neo-Baroque style and was inaugurated in 1904. The statuary group depicts a hunting party led by Matthias Corvinus, the king of Hungary. Sometimes is compared with Trevi Fountain in Rome.
