Fountain Landmark
See the iconic Matthias Fountain, one of the most photographed monuments in the capital city. Located in a courtyard of Buda Castle, the monument depicts Matthias Corvinus, a famed king, and his hunting party. Notice the king's coat of arms decorating the niche above the hunters. The bronze female figure to the right is Szép Ilonka, the young woman the king fell in love with while he was disguised as a commoner. When Szép Ilonka discovered his identity, she decided their love was impossible and died of a broken heart. She is immortalized in the fountain, forever looking at her lover. • The Matthias Fountain built in the western forecourt of Buda Palace was built in Neo-Baroque style and was inaugurated in 1904. The statuary group depicts a hunting party led by Matthias Corvinus, the king of Hungary. Sometimes is compared with Trevi Fountain in Rome.
  • Such a cool statue.
