Margaret Island, Budapest

4.2
#2 of 54 in Parks in Hungary
Walk, swim, or visit the sites at Margaret Island, a popular place for recreation in the heart of the city. In the 13th century this area was called "Island of Rabbits," but it has undergone many changes since then. View ruins of medieval churches and a Dominican convent on the island. Come during a concert at the island's open-air theater, see an outdoor movie, or eat dinner under the stars. Hang out at one of the many restaurant or cafes on the island, go for a run, have a picnic in a landscaped garden, relax at an outdoor pool, or play in the sun at Palatinus water park. Plan your visit to Margaret Island and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Budapest tour planner.

What a marvelous little island in the middle of the Danube river. It is an easy stop off the tram and is a delightful haven in the midst of the big city.  more »

A very cozy island that is as good as a right, they see bikes and even small electric cars to transport themselves with if you can't be bothered to go. A lot of sights like ancient ruins, musical fountain, and much more.

So full disclosure here I only saw a small part of the island but it was enough to impress me. I happened to be in Budapest during the 2018 FINA World Aquatics Championships and I decided to check out a water polo match which was being played at a venue on the island. From what I saw it looked like a hub for recreational activities like swimming, running, etc. My favourite part was this beautiful fountain that had a number of different shows choreographed to music with light. Completely mesmerizing! It's a great and convenient place to escape the city for a leisurely stroll, or a brisk jog.

Margaret Island is located on the north part of Budapest and it's accessible via a sort of path on the left in Margit Hid bridge. It's a very quiet and lovely island which is a sort of a park with fountains, statues and other amenities. It's really beautiful during the summer period because people go there to sunbathe or just to chill out.

Great place to relax and enjoy a sunny afternoon. I would recommend bringing a picnic as there is little choice for food on the island. Palatinus baths were also excellent, cheap with a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

It 's so beautiful and relaxing, good for doing some exercise and it has a special path for runners and cyclists separately. You can also rent an electric car or a bicycle to explore the whole island and the special thing about this place is you feel out of the city when you go there.

I'm sure it will be lovely when it's finished but now (May 2017) it resembles a large building site. Very little in the way of cafe's or refreshments, so quite disappointing really. Even the river views are not the best bits of Budapest.
