Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum, Budapest
(3.5/5 based on 45+ reviews on the web)
The Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest, dating back to 1802, houses the largest natural history collections of Hungary and the region.History of the museumFoundationIn 1802, Count Ferenc Széchényi offered his library and his numismatic collection for the benefit of the Hungarian nation, so as to establish the base of a future national library, and a scientific and education center. This foundation gave rise to the Hungarian National Museum (and the Széchényi Library). Within the museum, the mineral collection of Julianna Festetics, the wife of the count, served as the origin of the future natural history collections. The first paleontological collection was a gift of Archduke Rainer in 1811, and the first zoological collection was bought in the same year. In 1818 the late Pál Kitaibel's herbarium was offered to the museum, giving rise to the new Botanical department. At the time of Hungary's revolution against the Austrian Empire in 1848, the mineral collection harbored about 13.000 specimens and the zoological collection about 35.000 specimens. In the period after the fall of the revolution, however, the only major change was the acquisition of the collections of the Royal Hungarian Natural History Society in 1856.

  • This is an amazing exhibition of Hungarian history, excellently presented and documented. We were very impressed with the range and quality of the exhibits. Some of the information was very new to us,...  more »
  • Hungary local natural history exhibits of various stuffed and model in the Museum. The sheer size of the audience-friendly to have gone. Almost no English description of the most busy and see that even not-so-dominated model exhibition.

  • First of all, the place is a maze. For a museum, that's really negative. Most of the exhibits are about the old castle, but they are a lot, and tiring. I liked the stuff on the upper floor, which conc...  more »

  • Absolutely lovely museum. Good for both kids and adults alike, with lots of interesting scientific information in both English and Hungarian. There are life size dinosaurs in the garden and an ark filled with taxidermy animals. Great way to spend a couple of hours, and set in a beautiful park.
  • Good exhibits. Dinosaur Garden is pretty small but still impressive for kids.
  • One of the best equipped museums to make exhibitions interactive. Good for families and classes.
  • Very disappointing in my opinion. If you just get the general admittance ticket, without any exhibitions, you'll be through in half an hour. Also, very obviously aimed at kids. Not a bad thing per se, I just found it rather boring.
  • Mostly for kids and im not sure about the parking. But an amazing place fir children!
