Citadella, Budapest

4.1
Climb the hill to Citadella for a panoramic view of the city, the Danube, and its eight bridges. Built in 1851 by the Habspurgs to demonstrate their control over the Hungarians, this fortress was never used in battle. Climb the winding stairs to the top of the hill or take a bus, taxi, or car and park in the available spots. Plan your visit to Citadella and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Budapest day trip planning app .

  • On a hot night, with 31 degrees, fiu this absolutely wonderful location, in the hills of Buda. The view over the city at night is absolutely spectacular. For me, without doubt the most beautiful spot of Budapest.

  • The citadel is located high on Gellert Hill near the Liberty Statue, this U-shaped fortress was built in 1851 and is open for tourists to visit. Unfortunately a visit was not on our itinerary on the d...  more »
  • Beautiful scenery, not open to the public, stalls with prohibitive prices. A stall even asked €1 to take a picture. Very demanding, so much so that if you are in Budapest, I recommend you do it first thing.

  • Amazing park where you can enjoy an astonishing view on the city of Budapest. A walk that is so much worth it, it allows you to see both Buda and Pest quite clearly. On top, the famous monument created by the communism government that stayed as it is today because the people appreciated the beauty of the main statue.
  • Tiring to walk up, but the view at the end of it is well worth it. Simply breathtaking. There is also cafes and souvenir shops at the top. The statue is beautiful and is generally interesting to walk around.
  • Excellent view! I climbed up the hill just to visit this monument. Super tired, long, and hilly. But it all was faded away up there. Worth a try. But couldnt find any explanation of the place, not even something written down just to tell what's the statue about, or how many meters above the sea, whatsoever. Bit dirty, but you will find places to buy some drinks
  • The hill provides one of the best views on both sides of the city and the beautiful Liberty Bridge. Great place for outdoor relaxation far from the traffic and noises of the city.
  • We saw a very nice air show. The view was great, we've had lots of fun.

Attracting countless visitors with its architecture, history, and atmosphere, Budapest also provides a great selection of places to stay. The city’s hotels include everything from cozy and economical boutique establishments to luxurious world-renowned chains. Alternatively, choose from the huge variety of bed and breakfasts and hostels, as well as rental apartments ranging from economic to deluxe. While accommodations are spread throughout the city, more of them cluster on the livelier Pest side. You may want to place yourself near the sights you want to see most, but keep in mind that the city's wide public transportation network makes it relatively easy to reach all the major attractions no matter where you’re staying.
