Visit the ancient Mayan city of Copan Ruinas, near the border with Guatemala. Inhabited for more than 2,000 years, the settlement reached its peak between the 5th and 9th centuries CE. Situated in a fertile river valley, the archaeological site sits at an elevation of 700 m (2,300 ft). Explore the extensive ruins renowned for their vast array of stelae, elaborately carved monuments of ancient leaders, and numerous hieroglyphs.
