Champ de Mars, Port-au-Prince

(1.4/5 based on 40 reviews on the web)
Walk around at Champ de Mars, Port-au-Prince's major park and hub of political power. Afternoon crowds here provide a window into daily life in the capital, when you can gather with locals and chat with friendly street vendors and artists. Peruse the park's several monuments to discover the history of Haiti: the ruins of the national palace, a former army barracks, and statues of Haiti's founding fathers (Pétion, Louverture, Dessalines, Christophe, and Capois). A visit to Champ de Mars represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Port-au-Prince trip itinerary maker to plot your vacation.

  • Following a two-week trip, hosted in a religious centre in Port au Prince, I have seen the human misery of this troubled country to a humanitarian disaster and a lack of humanity. Whenever I got to eat at this place, I was faced with children abandoned, doomed to themselves who came to recover the remains of my meal. When I referred the problem to a sister of the religious center that hosted me, it just said that it shouldn't do anything otherwise these children would lose their 'freedom'. I think that this speaks for itself. Not to mention 400 thousand children of domesticity, children to the status of slaves, nearly half a million in Haiti...

  • Near the Presidential Palace, partly destroyed by the earthquake of 2010, the field of Mars is a place in the historic city center of the capital Port-au-Prince. There is the statue of Jean Jacques Dessalines, one of the heroes of the independence of the country, as well as the Museum of the Panthéon National Haïtien (Mupanah) and its flamboyant gardens. Great place to discover the city, its history, its culture. You can find some souvenir sellers and sellers of cooked dishes.
