Port-au-Prince
Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, gives most visitors their first taste of the country, along with all of its rugged and lively charm. The already economically embattled capital was devastated by the 2010 earthquake, with rebuilding efforts ongoing and many of the city's poorer citizens still displaced. Despite the challenges (and there have been many) the city has been on the mend, with tourism beginning to pick up. For the tourists that do make the journey, Port-au-Prince more than satisfies. Rich in history and with diverse cultural influences, Port-au-Prince's attractions range from colonial-era buildings to lively local eateries serving the country's idiosyncratic cuisine. With the country's main airport located here, Port-au-Prince also acts as a gateway for explorations further afield. Use our world travel planner: Port-au-Prince and all its delights await.

Where to stay in Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince offers a plethora of accommodations, though surprisingly few by the water. The most popular area to stay is in the southern neighborhood of Petion-Ville, where you can choose from a range of hotels, many with swimming pools and complimentary breakfast. The suburb of Turgeau--also in the south but closer to the coast--offers a similar selection of options. If you stay a bit farther north, you'll have easy access to the city's airport.
