#3 of 14 in Museums in Guatemala City
Unearth one of the world's biggest collections of Maya art with a visit to Museo Popol Vuh. Home to an extensive collection of pre-Colombian and colonial art and artifacts from the Maya people, the museum houses a particularly impressive exhibit of funerary ceramic art, as well as some of the best-preserved Maya vases and bowls in existence. Through the museum’s many displays, you'll uncover pieces dating as far back as the Paleoindian era of 9,000 BC, right up to the baroque and renaissance sculptures of the 19th century. You can park nearby at the University Francisco Marroquín campus. • We are not so museum-goers, but enjoyed the visit to the Museo Popol Vuh. Without our guide Ana, we would have understood but only a fraction of the whole objects and were very happy about all the detailed explanations. Absolutely recommended!

  • First, the museum is inside a private university, which btw, is stunningly beautiful. We went to see the reproduction of the Popol Vuh, but were surprised by the place. While most of the best Mayan ar...  more »
  • Very intimate setting. Wonderful information on textiles and their impact to the various people groups. History was well presented.  more »

  • Interesting place with pricey parking! Q45 entrance, Q15 to take a camera in and Q60 for parking. Friendly staff and valuable objects but I was disappointed that they will only stamp your parking ticket if you buy from the textile gift shop. Surprisingly, the lady at the gift shop didn’t know this but the police at the exit told us.
  • OK - First things first...the Popul Vuh is NOT here. I thought I had read it was, but I was wrong. That doesn't mean it wasn't worth the trip, but I don't think I could get away with opening the Museum of the Mona Lisa if I was only displaying a recent copy of the Mona Lisa amoung other regional works. I did enjoy seeing the displays and they do have interesting pieces and information. For photographers - you have to pay an additional fee to take a camera in - about $2, that includes cell phone pictures. If I had it to do over again I probably wouldn't bother. If you do choose to take a DSLR in - the lighting is so low I had to shoot at ISO2000 with a f4 lens. I would highly recommend at least a f2.8 (which I did not have with me) if not a 35mmf1.4.
