La Merced, Guatemala City

4.8
#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Guatemala City
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Visit La Merced, a Baroque-style church with a captivating yellow facade, and an even more exciting interior. Built between 1780 and 1813, the church should not be confused with its sister church in Antigua, although it now holds many of the Antiguan church's artworks due to damage done by an earthquake. The gold-coated central altar captures your attention upon entering, with lavishly decorated sculptures of saints embossed in gold and silver, and an extensive collection of art and relics also worthy of attention. The silver-plated altarpiece of San Judas Tadeo, frequently visited by pilgrims, stands out as the collection's highlight. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Guatemala City holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the La Merced and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
