La Merced, Guatemala City

(90 reviews on the web)
Religious Site
Visit La Merced, a Baroque-style church with a captivating yellow facade, and an even more exciting interior. Built between 1780 and 1813, the church should not be confused with its sister church in Antigua, although it now holds many of the Antiguan church's artworks due to damage done by an earthquake. The gold-coated central altar captures your attention upon entering, with lavishly decorated sculptures of saints embossed in gold and silver, and an extensive collection of art and relics also worthy of attention. The silver-plated altarpiece of San Judas Tadeo, frequently visited by pilgrims, stands out as the collection's highlight. • I believe that it is the most beautiful church in Guatemala City. It has a neo-classical structure, which decorate stunning baroque paintings. The site, besides being used for religious worship, is used for concerts of classical music and the acoustics are wonderful. It also has various religious sculptures. The Church of la Merced, is without doubt a true work of art. A jewel in the heart of the city of Guatemala.

  • La Merced is a beautiful church. With great works of art including paintings and sculptures. A place of faith in the center of the city. It is worth visiting it if makes a tour of several churches in the city centre. Close to it there are others with much historical value. Need to know the place where will leave the truck (a private parking). There are several there. And as all central location, it is best to walk without valuables. To the side there is a museum that is worth visiting. It is approximately 7 blocks from the Metropolitan Cathedral. For Christmas, a very nice large birth they place abroad.
