La Aurora Zoo, Guatemala City

#1 of 96 in Outdoors in Guatemala
Come and see the animals at La Aurora Zoo, a large zoological park. Established in 1924 as part of a major regeneration project, the zoo has become a popular place to escape the city rush. Head to the African section to see zebras, lions, and buffalos, and spot three species of Asian monkeys, with howlers shouting at the overhead traffic from the nearby airport. Take a stroll through the landscaped gardens, relaxing under the shade of the trees, and head to the onsite restaurants when you're feeling in need of a meal. • In these times in which many people take as option a stroll in shopping malls, worth out of that routine and the zoológico La Aurora. When I was a child to this time, this zoo was greatly improved. It has very nice facilities and there is an area of fast food restaurants to eat there.

  • If you travel to Guatemala with children and have a morning or afternoon free is the perfect place! It is very close to the La Aurora international airport. Very central in Guatemala City. A safe place for everyone. The facilities are beautiful. Very modern, clean and with many services: restaurants, spas, games for children, interactive activities, etc. They have a wide variety of animals and enclosures are impressive. I very much recommend the new area: Kingdom of Khan and his reptiles. Already included in entry price. Also highly recommended: feed the giraffes (an extra price of approximately $1.25 is paid per person, to feed the giraffes and taking pictures). Will not regret it!

  • This so is beautiful. Definitely a place to visit with the family. The animals are taken care of and seem happy. The only suggestion I would make is for a second elephant to be brought in. The current elephant looks very sad and lonely. Other than that, this zoo has a variety of animals. There is a food court and children's playground, as well as a souvenir shop.
  • I'm not sure if I have already shared my experience in this zoo. I'm from El Salvador and in my country we do NOT have a decent zoo unfortunately, so when I visited Aurora Zoo, I was amazed. I love how everything is designed and decorated. How close you can see the different kind of animals. There are places where you can find food, souvenirs and other activities like feeding giraffes. I loved Guatemala and Aurora Zoo!
  • Animals are well taken care of. Important, they only take quetzales inside and there is one little kiosk that takes credit cards. There is a food court before getting into the zoo where you can find fast food but once inside you just have the kiosks. Some animals are free, walking on the zoo (like the peacocks and iguanas) there is a huge bird cage where you can actually interact with some beautiful birds. They give you the chance to feed the giraffes and some birds for around Q10 to Q15 (around $1 or $1.50).
  • The best experience of this Zoo is the fact that they DO take care of animals and you can see it’s actually good. So as part of review of this place I can say it’s an excellent Zoo where people of all ages can go and learn about an extended variety of species and how they live in the wilderness so we can contribute to keep environment well prepared for nature.
  • An amazing, high quality zoo that I think should rank among the best! Animal enclosures we're spacious and not overcrowded, overall the animals seemed happy and active. I really enjoyed their reptile exhibit, dozens of local species rarely seen outside of the wild. There were some animals like iguanas and peacocks walking free among the grounds which is always an exciting up close experience. We came in the afternoon on a Tuesday, all the school field trips seemed to be leaving just as we were arriving. Admission was 33Q per adult and included readmission between the park entrance/food court and the zoo itself. The park entrance had a great animal-themed playground for the kids, and a food court with about 10 options from Pollo Campero to Domino's. If you go on a Tuesday or Sunday don't miss the giraffe feeding! A once in a lifetime experience for only 10Q!
