Santo Tomas Church, Chichicastenango

4.5
#2 of 7 in Things to do in Chichicastenango
Built around 1545 on top of a pre-Columbian temple, Santo Tomas Church exudes a mystical and spiritual vibe. Climb up the massive Mayan stairs to discover the power of ancient tradition, enduring hand in hand here with modern Christianity. Enter the dim interior and see old pictures of saints covered with black soot, the result of centuries of incense and candle burning. Observe Mayan rituals and prayers and learn about some of the oldest religious traditions in the world--all this in the middle of a vibrant, bustling market. • Truly an unforgettable experience. I was a Sunday (it starts at 8: 00 in the morning) and I especially do not regret to have stay up late. Many similarities with a Catholic mass in our countries, except that the Gospel is read in 2 languages: Spanish and quiche (maya). Very beautiful music accompanied the mass (marimba & contrabass) and singing in 2 languages also. People are dressed in traditional outfits and the moment that I liked the most, it of when everyone gives the hand or takes in arms (to forgive). You participate, of course :) The mass takes 1 h 30. Take a little bit of money with you, to make a small donation.
