Built around 1545 on top of a pre-Columbian temple, Santo Tomas Church exudes a mystical and spiritual vibe. Climb up the massive Mayan stairs to discover the power of ancient tradition, enduring hand in hand here with modern Christianity. Enter the dim interior and see old pictures of saints covered with black soot, the result of centuries of incense and candle burning. Observe Mayan rituals and prayers and learn about some of the oldest religious traditions in the world--all this in the middle of a vibrant, bustling market. • Santo Tomás is a simple Church, but keep inside one of the best examples of religious blends American, the hybrid formed by Christianity brought by Europeans and native peoples beliefs... of this clash between Catholic monotheism and polytheism of the new world. A truly unmissable experience for those willing to explore ancestral customs and enter inside the Temple in question, in a world of strange feelings and great learning.

  • Travelling Guatemala there is a "must" stop in small Indian willage Chichicastenango and if you are lucky you will go there when local market is open watched over by snow white Santo Tomas church!
  • Very authentic place where Mayan traditions meet Christian ceremonies
  • Mass spoken in Spanish and K'iche.
  • A place that no one should stop visiting, this is the true living culture, share with the Quiches (Maya in the region) the goes and comes from its market even with bartering and living presence of the dancers around one church, people, culture, gastronomy, colour, life... that is GUATEMALA
