Volcán Pacaya, Antigua

4.3
One of the country's most active volcanoes, Volcán Pacaya erupts regularly but usually in a mildly explosive fashion. As a visitor, you'll have the opportunity to take guided tours around this natural wonder, which features cooled lava chambers and hot spots (over which you can roast marshmallows). Consider taking a horseback tour of the volcano for a quick and less strenuous excursion compared to the 1.5-hour uphill hike. Put Volcán Pacaya into our Antigua day trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • When researching this excursion prior to arrival in Guatemala, I was utterly confused with the vast price differences. I discovered that you can pay as little as $11US pp transportation plus 50Q ($6.8...  more »
  • Excursion to do necessarily with a guide, allow about 60Q for the round trip + the guide at the start of Antigua, + 50Q for the entrance of the site. My hotel-Agency proposed departures at 6 o'clock in the morning, 9 am or 2 pm in the afternoon, and most of the people or guides like lonely, backpacker... recommend to do this tour in the morning. For my part, I chose the one from 2 o'clock in the afternoon for several reasons (want to sleep to catch up with the time difference of arrival the day before, and enjoy free breakfast!) and I do not regret! Leave in the morning has the advantage to maximize your chances of having a nice weather and few clouds, to better observe the surroundings. Not of sunrise on the other hand, when you arrive on site it's already light. By taking the schedule in the afternoon, two advantages:-there is a lot less crowded, since everyone reads the same guides of trips, the same advice, and favours the morning--although a few clouds at the top, but the view of the sunset is beautiful, clouds or not! The descent into the night by the light of lamps or mobile phones is quite comical. Attention to avoid stepping on a snake. Otherwise, you are probably already aware but in addition to the view of the surroundings and especially the Fuego volcano, the highlight of the visit rest tasting marshmallows grilled in the heat of the volcanic rock... Unforgettable experience for myself! Only regret, yet supposed to guide limited English be bilingual. Last tip: take a hot to the top thing (especially if you take the schedule in the evening).
