Volcán Pacaya, Antigua

4.3
One of the country's most active volcanoes, Volcán Pacaya erupts regularly but usually in a mildly explosive fashion. As a visitor, you'll have the opportunity to take guided tours around this natural wonder, which features cooled lava chambers and hot spots (over which you can roast marshmallows). Consider taking a horseback tour of the volcano for a quick and less strenuous excursion compared to the 1.5-hour uphill hike. Put Volcán Pacaya into our Antigua day trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • It is a must-see in Antigua, they can make the journey by horse or on foot (it is not difficult), going to enjoy much further this can have a beautiful and good-time view from Guatemala City

  • Had an awesome experience . The group was small and full of energy to make the climb. I chose the horseback option 1/4 if he way through as the climb and altitude and pace was slowing the younger folk...  more »
  • We did the tour from antigua with a 7-year-old girl and an 11-month-old baby. The Agency was very punctual in his collection and after an hour and a half we started the climb to the volcano with Karina. My spouse with the baby, and my daughter used the horses that you rent by 100 quetzals each single one by the rise. They are quiet animals and that they take all the time for your safety. The rise is a bit difficult for parties, especially for someone like me who is badly physically. But the guides await you and strategically stop to admire the view and to take air. Above, the day permitting, you have spectacular views of the volcanoes of fuego and acatenango, and obviously pacaya. Then you come to the dry lava that still retains some heat and kitchens marshmallows... The favorite part of my daughter...

  • We went with close friends an experience that we will never forget. Our kids loved it and still talk about it. The hike was great, the views are magnificent. We rented the walking sticks, there were horses that followed the group, all of us made it up fine.
  • Great tour. Just go with the flow, but a few things..... Good idea to "rent the walking stick" if you don't have poles There will be guides with horses that follow you asking if you want "taxi"; it's totally annoying, but they eventually go away
  • Excellent day excursion from Antigua, about 1.5 hr trip. The trek up is manageable but somewhat steep, you should be in decent to good physical shape. Dress comfortable...You will get tired but the views are worth it. They do have horses (with guide) for rent that you can mount if the hike is too much. Recommend taking a flashlight if doing the sunset hike since it's quite dark when descending.
  • Really cool experience and not as hard of a hike as others say. Going with a group you will get PLENTY of opportunities to stop. I'd recommend bringing some food to eat at the top since our group hung out for about 20 minutes before heading down.
  • PACAYA A MUST. watching lava live is priceless. If you dont care about money rent the horse. Hiking shoes is a must.
