Volcán Pacaya, Antigua

4.4
One of the country's most active volcanoes, Volcán Pacaya erupts regularly but usually in a mildly explosive fashion. As a visitor, you'll have the opportunity to take guided tours around this natural wonder, which features cooled lava chambers and hot spots (over which you can roast marshmallows). Consider taking a horseback tour of the volcano for a quick and less strenuous excursion compared to the 1.5-hour uphill hike. Put Volcán Pacaya into our Antigua day trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Admitting that I had prepared at the level of clothing to make the climb the volcano, I must say it was one of the heaviest experience I went through in Guatemala! Very difficult (for ME), I recommend clothes and suitable shoes! the soil is sandy and very slippery!

  • It was quite hard to climb, but amazing once we got to the top! Just an incredible experience :)))))  more »
  • There are two options: either on foot or on horseback (doesn't cost much, even 100 Quetzal). We made walking up to the highest point accessible. About 13 km round trip and about 700 meters in altitude. Not difficult route up to 3/4, then it becomes rather steep and slippery for the lava solidified. When we made the climb there was so much wind and so it's more tiring but also very gratifying result. You do with normal shoes trainers, but at the end of the trail will be completely black! Dress in layers, there might be wind and cold, but then you can warm up and you will sweat.

  • Excellent day excursion from Antigua. The trek up is manageable but somewhat steep, you should be in decent to good physical shape. Dress comfortable...You will get tired but the views are worth it. They do have horses (with guide) for rent that you can mount if the hike is too much. Recommend taking a flashlight if doing the sunset hike since it's quite dark when descending.
  • Most people on my tour had been touring, trekking and training for climbs like this. I am not in super great shape but did fine. The surprise for me was sulphur and gasses that burned the eyes.
  • Here is a very valuable tip from one traveler to another: Go to Salamandras House first ! If you want honest and reliable information, go and see the staff of the salamandras house. Don't listen to anybody in the tourist office, "National Park authorities" or the numerous guys in the parking lot. It is not a national park, but it is private property and you don't need a guide. The best way to do it is to spend a night there in the little hotel next to the Park entrance and leave early morning. If you go early enough, you can go into the park for free.
  • 2.5km hike to the crater should be fine for average people. Nice sunset view on the way.
  • Nice daytrip from Antigua. Entrance fee is 50 Quetzal per person. Good physical condition is recommended but not needed due to the fact that you can rent horses to ride up to the viewpoint. However, renting horses comes at additional costs of 300 Quetzal. A guide is also not needed, but may tell you that he is mandatory. The path can't be missed so you might think twice paying 150 Quetzal for the guide extra.
