Volcán Pacaya, Antigua

4.4
One of the country's most active volcanoes, Volcán Pacaya erupts regularly but usually in a mildly explosive fashion. As a visitor, you'll have the opportunity to take guided tours around this natural wonder, which features cooled lava chambers and hot spots (over which you can roast marshmallows). Consider taking a horseback tour of the volcano for a quick and less strenuous excursion compared to the 1.5-hour uphill hike. Put Volcán Pacaya into our Antigua day trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • There are 36 volcanoes in Guatemala and 3 of them are erupting. One of them is the Pacaya volcano. You have to climb with a guide, I recommend it to Uber is an excellent guide. Along the route it was telling us about the vegetation of the place and the most important eruptions the volcano had. We had the opportunity to see the volcano in activity. It is impressive. It should be prepared for a 2 hour hike rising.

  • About a 2-2,5 hour hike to the active crater. Totally worth it! Awesome closeup view! If you take a tour or go up with a guide make sure you go all the way up and not just to the marshmallow spot. Fan...  more »
  • This is a level 2 out of 5 hike, in difficulty. But it certainly is a 5/5 when it comes to the sightseeing of the valle de los volcanes in central Guatemala. Easily accessible from Antigua and also fr...  more »

  • Excellent day excursion from Antigua. The trek up is manageable but somewhat steep, you should be in decent to good physical shape. Dress comfortable...You will get tired but the views are worth it. They do have horses (with guide) for rent that you can mount if the hike is too much. Recommend taking a flashlight if doing the sunset hike since it's quite dark when descending.
  • Most people on my tour had been touring, trekking and training for climbs like this. I am not in super great shape but did fine. The surprise for me was sulphur and gasses that burned the eyes.
  • Here is a very valuable tip from one traveler to another: Go to Salamandras House first ! If you want honest and reliable information, go and see the staff of the salamandras house. Don't listen to anybody in the tourist office, "National Park authorities" or the numerous guys in the parking lot. It is not a national park, but it is private property and you don't need a guide. The best way to do it is to spend a night there in the little hotel next to the Park entrance and leave early morning. If you go early enough, you can go into the park for free.
  • 2.5km hike to the crater should be fine for average people. Nice sunset view on the way.
  • Nice daytrip from Antigua. Entrance fee is 50 Quetzal per person. Good physical condition is recommended but not needed due to the fact that you can rent horses to ride up to the viewpoint. However, renting horses comes at additional costs of 300 Quetzal. A guide is also not needed, but may tell you that he is mandatory. The path can't be missed so you might think twice paying 150 Quetzal for the guide extra.
