Iglesia de La Merced, Antigua

4.5
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. • The yellow and white intricately detailed exterior of this Jesuit Baroque church built in 1545 was the real draw for us, while the interior was rather plain in comparison. The very historic church was...  more »
  • Our visit to La Merced was very moving. The outside's beautiful and ornate facade is only second to its interior. There is a little park out front where people sell fruit and goods, but we didnt find ...  more »
  • Included in the tour there was a quick ride to Antigua that also includes La Merced. Typical town of the Central America, chaotic, dirty, with hundreds of vendors that pound constantly and don't let you breathe. La Merced is a typical Central American Church with nice amenities. The square in front of the Plaza is a flee market with vendors. Nearby there is the Arco de Santa Catalina as good as structure. Always close the Cathedral who sincerely seems somewhat forgotten. Overall a touristic city average.

  • It's a beautiful church right being the Catalina arch and definitely worth the visit. Like the exterior, the inside of the church is also beautiful.
  • This is one of those must see places at Antigua, even if you're not a Catholic. There are food vendors outside in the church's park, great place to taste Guatemalan typical cuisine. These vendors are mostly seasonal, and mostly operate in the afternoon and night so don't get disappointed if you don't find them.
  • Very beautiful church, inside and out. You cannot help by being moved once inside. Architecturally beautiful as well. A must see.
  • Beautiful church at both day and night.
  • La Merced is a half a block from the famed Arch in Antigua. The Church has an interior that represents much of the history of Antigua and Guatemala. During Semana Santa which is Good Friday the processions start out of La Merced Church at 4 in the morning and wonders through the streets of Antigua will sunrise. The church does not have specific tours however you can also walk the grounds of the church.
