Iglesia de la Merced, Antigua

(4.5/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de la Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. • I visited it in January and was illuminated with Christmas lights, both as the cross Church. On the inside is beautiful, many people visit it. On the outskirts, people gather to sell what they produce.

  • It is important to make a visit to this church, is part of the local culture, has a very striking color and highlights in the surroundings, is well preserved despite being one of the colonial era. I love its facade details.

  • La Merced is a half a block from the famed Arch in Antigua. The Church has an interior that represents much of the history of Antigua and Guatemala. During Semana Santa which is Good Friday the processions start out of La Merced Church at 4 in the morning and wonders through the streets of Antigua will sunrise. The church does not have specific tours however you can also walk the grounds of the church.
  • Iconic landmark due to its yellow, arabesque facade. Worth a visit. The Convent ruins next door have signage in English and is cheaper than other ruins in town.
  • Take a few minutes and go see this church. Beautiful from the outside. Makes for some great pictures. You dont really need to waste your time going in. The outside facade is what you are there for
  • Not much to do here, walked in for a few minutes, walked around, that's it. It's not bad, just not spectacular either. Maybe I missed it on a good day, or there's better times to go, but you could skip it and not miss much.
  • A church I am especcially fond of visiting at dawn or at night. Make sure to pay it at visit and do go inside if possible.
