Iglesia de La Merced, Antigua

4.5
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. • It is one of the emblematic buildings of the city, it is worth the journey through the Church and the ruins. The central source of the cloister is spectacular.

  • This beautiful church, structure of Baroque, he has more than 200 years old, which makes it an icon of the city. Entering the ex-convent that is on par with the Church, this enabled for tourists and its interior you can see a lot of arches, which serve as a prelude to the monumental fountain located in the center of the main courtyard. The second floor, you can see beautiful views of the city and of the volcanoes that surround it. In a small park which is at the same time, you can enjoy a wide variety of typical food, which is sold in small carts. The day I visited, I could witness a wedding, so I enjoyed the beautiful decor that had been destined for the occasion. If you are in antigua or think the town, this church is a place that you should not know.

  • This is not just an archtectually magnificent church building that has been restored, it is an active, functioning church central to the old city of Antigua. If you never see it, you will hear it. It's bell ring out through the day announcing every parochial thing. Vendors set up booths in the park grounds by it. They also let you tour part of the Monastery that was largely destroyed in an earthquake.
  • Nice looking church! The semana Santa procession starts here. So it gets super duper crowded with vendors, tourists, locals, tv crews during that week. Great food deals. We got tamales for Q5. And some fancy no-sting honey.
  • Si hay algo que hay por todas partes en Antigua son iglesias hermosas, y esta no es la excepción.
  • The church looks good at night also.
  • It's a beautiful church right being the Catalina arch and definitely worth the visit. Like the exterior, the inside of the church is also beautiful.
