Iglesia de La Merced, Antigua

4.5
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. • Once again enjoyed the atmosphere of peace and tranquility that inspire those areas of the Church of La Merced in the tigua Guatemala. Explore the cobbled streets full of nostalfia and tradition are a source of peace and tradition. A few nice revuerdos in the source of its colonial Atrium. Incomparable beauty.

  • Very nice and beautiful. Good to go there in the afternoon when there are a lot of street food places open. Many tourists but not crowded. Close to st. Katharine's arch.  more »
  • The effigy of Jesus Christ holding the cross that was carved in 1650 is breathtaking just from a history standpoint alone. Then the fact that it has withstood time. I especially like the contrast of t...  more »

  • This is not just an archtectually magnificent church building that has been restored, it is an active, functioning church central to the old city of Antigua. If you never see it, you will hear it. It's bell ring out through the day announcing every parochial thing. Vendors set up booths in the park grounds by it. They also let you tour part of the Monastery that was largely destroyed in an earthquake.
  • Nice looking church! The semana Santa procession starts here. So it gets super duper crowded with vendors, tourists, locals, tv crews during that week. Great food deals. We got tamales for Q5. And some fancy no-sting honey.
  • Si hay algo que hay por todas partes en Antigua son iglesias hermosas, y esta no es la excepción.
  • The church looks good at night also.
  • It's a beautiful church right being the Catalina arch and definitely worth the visit. Like the exterior, the inside of the church is also beautiful.
