Iglesia de La Merced, Antigua

4.5
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. • We walked by this church every day while in Antigua and enjoyed the people around the property. It wasn't until we spent 15 minutes inside during a church service to a standing room only crowd where t...  more »
  • The complex corresponds to the Church and convent of La Merced. The entrance to the convent has a cost of 15Q. Inside the convent is a source of octagonal form with four bridges leading to the central part of the shore. You can tour the ground floor and a first floor. It contains sufficient explanatory posters which serve to contextualize the visit. Annex to the convent Church of Baroque style that can not ignore his visit is located. It should be noted that within the Church it is not permitted to take photographs. The Church and convent of La Merced is one of the sites that can not miss in Antigua.

  • Its worth a stop in for maybe a half an hr or so. In the courtyard outside vendors sell local food and beverages. Its pretty at night and a hangout spot for the young and old alike!  more »

  • It's a beautiful church right being the Catalina arch and definitely worth the visit. Like the exterior, the inside of the church is also beautiful.
  • This is one of those must see places at Antigua, even if you're not a Catholic. There are food vendors outside in the church's park, great place to taste Guatemalan typical cuisine. These vendors are mostly seasonal, and mostly operate in the afternoon and night so don't get disappointed if you don't find them.
  • Very beautiful church, inside and out. You cannot help by being moved once inside. Architecturally beautiful as well. A must see.
  • Beautiful church at both day and night.
  • La Merced is a half a block from the famed Arch in Antigua. The Church has an interior that represents much of the history of Antigua and Guatemala. During Semana Santa which is Good Friday the processions start out of La Merced Church at 4 in the morning and wonders through the streets of Antigua will sunrise. The church does not have specific tours however you can also walk the grounds of the church.
