Casa Santo Domingo, Antigua

(1,100+ reviews on the web)
Specialty Museum Museum
See a diverse collection of Central American art and artifacts in an atmospheric setting at Casa Santo Domingo--a museum and a five-star hotel built on the grounds of a 16th-century convent destroyed in an earthquake. Walk around the green courtyard inhabited by flamboyant parrots and see the historic ruins of a church and a crypt. Different museums on site cover everything from historical pharmaceuticals to contemporary art, with a significant collection of Central American art from several periods. The hotel's design incorporates the remains and Baroque features of the old convent. You don't have to be a hotel guest to dine in the picturesque restaurant--though do prepare for rather steep prices. • I see why this is rated number 1 on trip advisor. It is really cool. So much to see. Plan on a good 3-4 hours. It's like a whole bunch of little museums rolled into 1. Some great old ruins and artifacts. You really need to do this. We entered from the university side and made our way through to the other end where there is a very fantastic restaurant which you should eat at. Made for a perfect day in Antigua.
  • A must see to visit when your in Antigua. An old convent is converted i to a beuatifull hotel and a combination of different museums which are all beautifull and interesting.
