  • The Museum perpetuates the memory of Victor Schœlcher, born in Paris on July 22, 1804 and died December 25, 1893 in Houilles. Journalist, art critic and musicologist, Victor Schoelcher was a staunch Republican and ardent defender of human rights. His most famous engagement was his fight for the abolition of slavery in the French colonies. It was he who, during the French Revolution of February 1848 and the establishment of a Republican Government convinced of the urgency of a final and immediate of slavery abolition. Until his death, he defended just causes, campaigning for universal suffrage, free and compulsory schooling for all, freedom of expression, the abolition of the death penalty, the rights of women... In 1883, Victor Schœlcher donated to the General Council of Guadeloupe to a collection of sculptures he had formed little by little since many years. It consisted of bas-reliefs, statuettes, busts, masks, figurines, medallions and medals, plaster, marble, porcelain, earthenware, terracotta and wax referring to different periods of history and the history of art. This buildup, worthy of a true cabinet of curiosities, offers a great illustration of the eclectic culture of Miami and his self-taught training. The collection was completed in 1885, by deposits of the State. The Louvre workshops realized for the Museum of Antiques and prints prints castings. The factory of Sevres sent a valuable porcelain collection. Schoelcher Museum was opened on July 21, 1887. Over time, the Museum's collections is étoffèrent for new deposits and the State of many donations and acquisitions. The Museum must play an undeniable role in memory of the slave. That's why he gathered during the last decades of dozens of objects and documents related to the history of slavery and the slave trade. These relatively rare items in public collections include prominently the objects in the collection Victor Schœlcher on slavery in the West Indies achieved in deposit of the quai Branly Museum. These objects were collected by Victor Schœlcher during his trip in the Caribbean between 1840 and 1841.

  • Arrive a week ago Guadalupe (June - 2107) and the Museum is closed, and long overdue. It was abandoned, although there was a sign of "reforms" seemed that you were making any reform. As so many coses in Guadeloupe was closed. they should take note in the page so us tourists not save the trip to the Museum.
