Create an itinerary including Carbet Falls (Les Chutes du Carbet)
Noted by Christopher Columbus in his 1493 log, Carbet Falls (Les Chutes du Carbet) tumble down distant volcanic slopes. Three spectacular cascades descending in size and elevation make up the falls, the second (and most accessible) of which reaches up to 110 m (360 ft). Follow the snaking path on a 30-minute hike to the cascade, which sits at 660 m (2,200 ft); here, you can also explore the many natural hot springs nearby. However, due to earthquakes in recent years, full access to the second fall is at present restricted. Only experienced trekkers should attempt the more challenging hikes to the first and third cascades, which nevertheless reward your efforts when you get there. Don't forget to bring water. • Can't really get close to the falls. There are other (free) paths leading to small pools nearby. Still a nice hike (~4h) to see fall 1.
  • Very high waterfall. The hike to access it is nice and accessible for youngers. But considering the 2004 storm, the close access is blocked so we only saw it from distance
  • This was a worthwhile hike! Took us 3.5-4hrs roundtrip, we saw fall #2 and then fall #1 (the 2 tallest falls and I think the #3 fall is closed anyway). The #1/premiere fall is the most impressive of the 3. The hike has a lot of steps/wooden walkways which is nice, the rest is hiking on rocky ground through thick, lush vegetation. It’s very slippery and needs careful footing the whole time. Wasn’t as muddy as I expected after downpours most of day/night before we went, which was nice. Definitely need good hiking shoes/shoes with tread to help with the slipperiness! 2.50 euro/pp (I think there were cheaper family rates) at entrance when we arrived around 10am, though when we left around 1:30 the office was closed so I guess you don’t have to pay all the time? Plenty of parking almost right up to the hike start. Well maintained trail and signage. I only gave it 4 instead of 5 stars only bc I’m comparing to other hikes I’ve been on and this doesn’t compare to New Zealand waterfall hikes!
