Fort Fleur d'Epee, Le Gosier
(3.8/5 based on 90 reviews on the web)
Fort Fleur d'épée is a fortification on Grande-Terre on Guadeloupe. The origins of its name are unknown, though it may correspond to a nickname of a soldier who lived in it. It was built from 1750 to 1763 to a polygonal plan by Vauban in the heights above the town of Gosier, many metres above the bay. It is made up of underground rooms leading to small rooms. The powder magazine and kitchen with a furnace are still visible. It spacious entrance hall now hosts temporary art exhibitions. It was captured by the British then retaken by a French battalion under Victor Hugues which expelled the British from Guadeloupe on 3 June 1794.

  • First of all, easy access and free parking, it's a good thing. Then, free entry with a small issue at the entrance, still some good. Great view of the wide Bay of the gullet, again from the right. The visit is done quickly but different corners are well explained on the guide given to the entry. A underground Gallery with an exhibition and a changing exhibition on the central building also. When I think that people dare to put "a" while everything is free, should not make fun of the world. It is to do at least once for the discovery and history of the island.

  • a short visit because the fort is not still not great thing. a paper delivered with a smile and a joke. Despite the rainy day. Guide paper with explanation and number.. .but it's not always easy to find the number. It's visit is not essential but is no less friendly

  • A nice point of view over the bay and the region, sometimes used for city organised events and there's a house (not of origin) used for art/culture expositions. There are no entrance fees (at least when there are no events), however there is not much to see from the insides of the fort.
  • A very nice, well maintained Fort, which has views over large parts of the island in good weather. The basement corridors promise a little cooling off during hot weather. A large car park is immediately on the Fort, admission is free.
