Fort Fleur d'Epee, Le Gosier
(3.8/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
Fort Fleur d'épée is a fortification on Grande-Terre on Guadeloupe. The origins of its name are unknown, though it may correspond to a nickname of a soldier who lived in it. It was built from 1750 to 1763 to a polygonal plan by Vauban in the heights above the town of Gosier, many metres above the bay. It is made up of underground rooms leading to small rooms. The powder magazine and kitchen with a furnace are still visible. It spacious entrance hall now hosts temporary art exhibitions. It was captured by the British then retaken by a French battalion under Victor Hugues which expelled the British from Guadeloupe on 3 June 1794.

  • Surprising... free tour! Beautiful view of the Bay. Very friendly reception. Nice walk and discovery of the lower part of the fort. Beautiful exhibition of casting.

  • Location by the sea. Nice room but too bad: impossible to sleep at night (room side praking) with Disco that broadcasts music at bottom almost overnight response of the hotel: we can do anything

  • Fortification is mainly for the view of the ocean and the tip of greenery to the throat. For our part, nobody at the entrance, no explanation. Free parking and well maintained park.

  • A nice point of view over the bay and the region, sometimes used for city organised events and there's a house (not of origin) used for art/culture expositions. There are no entrance fees (at least when there are no events), however there is not much to see from the insides of the fort.
  • A very nice, well maintained Fort, which has views over large parts of the island in good weather. The basement corridors promise a little cooling off during hot weather. A large car park is immediately on the Fort, admission is free.
