Historic Site
Fort Fleur d'épée is a fortification on Grande-Terre on Guadeloupe. The origins of its name are unknown, though it may correspond to a nickname of a soldier who lived in it. It was built from 1750 to 1763 to a polygonal plan by Vauban in the heights above the town of Gosier, many metres above the bay. It is made up of underground rooms leading to small rooms. The powder magazine and kitchen with a furnace are still visible. It spacious entrance hall now hosts temporary art exhibitions. It was captured by the British then retaken by a French battalion under Victor Hugues which expelled the British from Guadeloupe on 3 June 1794.

  • We planned getting a taxi from the cruise terminal to the fort, but ended up walking. About 3 miles and took an hour. The remains of the fort are at the top of a hill and entrance was free. Not a lot ...  more »

  • This was a cool place to stop on your way to Saint Anne or Saint Francis. When we stopped they had an art shown in the tunnels which was a great use of the space. We spent a max of an hour here. The views are nice but there isn't much more going on. It's free to enter which is nice. If I were to have paid I would have been disappointed.
  • The panorama is fabulous combining the history of an old fortress with the view of the Long bay. There is no entrance fee and it won't take more than half an hour or an hour to visit this place.
  • A nice point of view over the bay and the region, sometimes used for city organised events and there's a house (not of origin) used for art/culture expositions. There are no entrance fees (at least when there are no events), however there is not much to see from the insides of the fort.
  • The fortress, which is worth seeing. The Fort is maintained. There is also a nice view of the surroundings.

  • A very nice, well maintained Fort, which has views over large parts of the island in good weather. The basement corridors promise a little cooling off during hot weather. A large car park is immediately on the Fort, admission is free.
