Fort Frederick, St. George's

#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in St. George's
Reward yourself with spectacular panoramic views from a landmark steeped in history at Fort Frederick, a pleasant addition to any St George itinerary. Built in 1779 by French invaders, who won the island by catching the British unprepared with an inland (instead of naval) attack. The fortification became known as “the backward facing fort,” due to its cannon’s position facing toward the island in an attempt to prevent future copycat attacks. As you wander around this crumbling military relic, you will be greeted at every turn with striking views of the coastline and the glittering horizon of the Caribbean Sea. • OK for history buffs ... You will gain a perspective that you could not get elsewhere and the views are great.  more »
  • A bit of a healthy walk up to fort however the view was great. A mix of history dating back to 1800 and more recent 1983 when the U S came to their rescue. One of the local tour guides took us through...  more »
  • Wow! This was a breathtaking experience. I was impressed with the ruins of this fort and took several photos. Most of the old brick wall is still in place and the view from the area is fantastic.  more »

  • Grenada is truly the most beautiful island in the world... Their historical sights are a marvel to witness... Such rich culture! The people are so friendly and welcoming. When I'm here, I have a hard time knowing eventually I'll be back in NY.
  • Fort Frederick is a former military fort with barracks, artillery batteries (canons) and a commanding view of the St. George's Harbour and the surroundings. The features which made it a worthwhile military fortification now makes it a rather scenic and quite important place of interest today. The great scenic panoramic views coupled with the well maintained/restored facilities makes Fort Frederick a worthwhile and indeed breathtaking place to visit and enjoy. The enthralling scenic views on either side (one down to St. George's Fort below, the city and environs and also the Harbour as well, on the other side is the inland villages and that great landscape which is not to be missed. Fort Frederick is a must see for anyone in Grenada and enjoys history, architecture or just love a great fort with Breathtaking scenery.
  • Great visual of St. George. A local tour can provide all the history of this fort. Worth the visit!
  • Interesting (but small) fort.
  • There isn't much to see at the fort, but the views from this place are awesome. There is a direct bus from the city and you can ask the bus to stop till the foot of the fort. A popular tourist spot.
